Smoothie bowls are the next big healthy food craze. Have you discovered the obsession yet?

A cross between colorful smoothies, and a bento box, they're basically a cold soup. Made exclusively with raw veggies, organic fruits, and other superfoods, smoothie bowls come topped with a beautiful array of fresh chopped toppings. Fruits, nuts, hemp and chia seeds, cacao nibs, and other colorful fruits are arranged on top of each bowl. 

You eat a smoothie bowl with a spoon, enjoying the chilled fruit-sweetened base with crunchy mouthfuls of colorful toppings. It's an easy, beautiful way to eat vegan, get more greens, and kickstart your day with raw, healthy foods. 

I came across smoothie bowls several weeks ago. They've taken OFF on Instagram, touted by the ethereal fitness foodie @lonijane, and celebrated by @detoxtips mama with the all-new @smoothiebowls account. Intrigued by how beautiful they were, I decided to start my mornings with a smoothie bowl, instead of a cup of coffee each day. The results have been divine. 

Rather than filling up on caffeine and cream, smoothie bowls are a simple way to start my day with skinny, healthy habits. A bowl full of totally raw fruits and veggies fills me up and ensures I'm getting my all important greens. Plus, carefully chosen toppings like hemp seeds, chia, sesame seeds, and avocado give me vital fats and energy that fuel me through the day without feeling hungry. 

But the real smoothie bowl obsession started when I began melting a touch of dark chocolate, then piping it into writing atop my smoothie bowl. It turned my breakfast into a source of morning inspiration. Suddenly, Smoothie Bowls became a deliciously fun way to start my day.

Today's word? Love. Because, when feel healthy, I feel happy, more balanced, more aware.  And that makes me love every moment a little bit more. 

Creamy, Dreamy Simple Smoothie Bowl

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 banana
  • 1" piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup coconut milk or almond milk beverage
  • 2 tablespoons dark chocolate melted with 1/2 teapsoon coconut oil 

Toppings: figs, sliced almonds, cacao nibs, hemp seeds 

In an industrial-strength blender, whip together the avocado, banana, ginger, vanilla, and coconut milk beverage. Pour into a bowl, top with toppings. Pipe dark chocolate and coconut oil out of the snipped corner of a ziptop bag. Write something inspiring. Serve and enjoy.
