Gasp! Did Charlie Hunnam Just Quit 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'?

Christian Grey: Did Charlie Hunnam Quit '50 Shades Of Grey?'

Is Charlie Hunnam really succumbing to fan pressure and quitting 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?!

Charlie Hunnam nabbed possibly the biggest—and definitely the most controversial—role of his life with Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey. But after a lot of fan backlash, has the Sons Of Anarchy star backed off from taking the part? Some sources say that Hunnam has dropped the coveted role of the S&M-loving billionaire.

Following news of hiring extra security to keep angry fans at bay and a petition reaching 75,000 signatures to have White Collar and Magic Mike star Matt Bomer replace Hunnam, new whispers say that the much-maligned star is abandoning the franchise. Is he?

Not yet. So far all the rumors of Hunnam's exit are just that—rumors. And he's got plenty of incentive to hang in there, because lots of franchise stars experience backlash before they're given a proper chance to prove themselves: Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, anyone?

While Hunnam may not have a ton of fan support, he has endorsements where they count: From E.L. James herself and casting director Sam Taylor-Johnson, as well as screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis. He's also discussed Hunnam's chemistry with co-star Dakota Johnson, who received some hate of her own simply for not being Alexis Bledel.

In the meantime, maybe Hunnam can team up with Ben Affleck (the future Batman) and start a support group ... at least until the cash starts flowing in. Then we think they'll feel just fine about their career decisions.
