'Prison Break' Hottie Wentworth Miller Announces He's Gay
Score one for the boys' team.
Ever the poised and polished gentleman, Wentworth Miller could not have come out in a more respectful and elegant manner.
The Prison Break star, 41, confirmed rumors while simultaneously standing up for LGBT rights after publicly declining an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, where he was to be a guest of honor.
"Thank you for your kind invitation," said Wentworth in a letter to the festival organizer, Maria Averbakh. "As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline."
The letter was posted to GLAAD's website and broke to the masses yesterday afternoon. I, for one, cheered out loud (and got some crazy looks from on-lookers since it was in the middle of the street) for his brilliant response.
He continues, "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly." Gay prides rallies are banned in Russia, and foreign visitors suspected of being homosexual could face detainment for 15 days. Right … so about those 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Russia? We foresee a problem.
In a movie, this is the part when Wentworth Miller would get a standing ovation. IRL, I'm still applauding him and am incredibly moved by his bold and brave gesture. So while I secretly mourn the loss of lust for Wentworth (I'm not one to take on a challenge of that size), I fully support his decision to come out now, in this moment, for the entire world to see. Cheers to you, Wentworth.
