2010's Most Surprising Celeb Breakups

In a week filled with shocking celebrity splits, YourTango revisits the year to date.

Knee-deep in the wake of Coquette's demise and Christina A. going sour on her "Candyman," gossip-loving tongues are wagging about surprising celebrity breakups. In lieu of pourin' out a little for relationships past, we thought we'd revisit a few of 2010's other most shocking splits so far:

Al and Tipper Gore: When news broke this summer that Al and Tipper were separating after 40 years of marriage, jaws dropped from Capital Hill to Kennebunkport. After all, this was the same cozy couple that claimed they'd inspired "Love Story" and shared a lengthy public smooch, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley-style, at the 2000 Democratic National Convention. Though the couple's split was reportedly amicable and attributed to simply "growing apart," pesky rumors of an affair with Laurie David still persisted.

Joe Jonas & Demi Lovato:
Lovingly nicknamed "Jemi" by their rabid mutual fans, those same fans were devastated to learn their canoodling teenybopper twosome had gone the way of Hanson. Seems all that bonfire-hot "Camp Rock" chemistry fizzled off-screen after all.... Joe Jonas And Ashley Greene Are Truly, Madly, Deeply In Love!

Reese Witherspoon & Jake Gyllenhaal: America's girl and guy next door, Reese and Jake seemed to be made for each other—and even managed to make it work for a wow-worthy (in Hollywood, at least) three years. But all good things come to an end, and this pair was no exception, moving on to power agent Jim Toth and Rachel Bilson respectively. What we miss most? The adorable photo ops, natch.

Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins: Oft mentioned in the same breath as Kurt and Goldie, Susan and Tim were the picture of non-marital bliss for 23 years. Affable activists and ever-so-hip parents, the couple had an affection so apparent it inspired a mental picture of him painting her toenails ala "Bull Durham." So when they went public with their split earlier this year, the jury was out on who was more upset—the stars or their fans.  Susan Sarandon Opens Up About Tim

Who's next? Whomever it is, it'll be hard to top the shock of these star breakups.
