Four Trends In Celebrity Engagement Rings

Experts from weigh in on celebrity engagement ring trends sweeping the world

You don't have to be a pop culture fanatic to notice forthcoming princess Kate Middleton's 12-carat blue sapphire engagement given to her by Prince William. After all, it was plucked from a Garrard catalogue for William late mother Princess Diana back in 1981.

Couples everywhere love celebrity engagement rings. They often look to their favorite recently engaged celebrity couples for their latest in what's hot among engagement ring styles and trends.

Since the Prince William engagement announcement, sales for engagement rings with sapphire stones have skyrocketed and jewelry companies are scrambling to accompany the millions of engagement ring purchasers who just want a sapphire for their bride-to-be.

The experts at premier online diamond retailer James Allen have broken down some of the latest trends among celebrity engagement rings and shown how you can use the trends behind them to purchase the engagement ring of your dreams.

Gems Instead of Diamonds

Rather than choosing the classic diamond engagement ring, Prince William decided to go with a ring that has a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire center. Sure, he took it from his late mother as a way to recognize her memory during this special time, but his proposal to Kate Middleton has brought back the gemstone trend and sent celeb fans scrambling to find imitations.

He's not the only celebrity whose engagement ring has a gemstone center to replace the traditional diamond. There's no Jessica Simpson wedding yet, but the pop star is flaunting her 3-stone Neil Lane ruby engagement, which is flanked by diamonds across the band.

The public will be eagerly searching for gemstone rings as a modern way to deviate from tradition and still flaunt their appealing fine jewelry for the entire world to see. Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are all the rage!

Asscher Cut Still Hot

The Asscher diamond company was well-known back in 1920s Amsterdam and it's still just as recognized today. The company's diamonds are all beautiful and well-cut but it's especially known for its Asscher cut diamond shape which is a classic square cut updated to today's modern times.
Celebs love it, so much so that they're still using this shape for the center stone on their diamond engagement rings. Jessica Simpson's ex Nick Lachey proposed to his partner Vanessa Minnillo with an Asscher-cut engagement ring on a platinum band and flanked by trapezoid shaped diamonds.
