About Deborah Cox

I’m a family psychologist and writer specializing in trauma-recovery for bright adults, couples therapy, and healing through writing.

As a trauma specialist, I’ve helped hundreds of people in their recovery from child abuse and religious abuse. I’ve helped many navigate their way out of repressive religious traditions and into ways of living that nourish them. Many of my clients are women who have learned to use their anger as a form of wisdom, to guide their decisions and enrich their relationships.

I’ve co-authored two books – and numerous journal articles – about women’s anger. My work has been featured in many popular venues, such as Cosmopolitan, Salon.com, Reuters Health, Good Housekeeping, Prevention, and Redbook.

I’ve also written and led research on women’s friendships in US beauty culture, an issue that involves cultural beauty standards and their impact on how we relate to each other.

Art and relationship save lives. Science provides the foundation for psychological work, but art and close, trusting relationships evolve us into the vibrant creatures we were meant to be. What I most want to see in the world is a better (more honest, more loving) connection between us.

My forthcoming book, Wife Material, is a work of autobiographical fiction that deepens the conversation around women’s sexual and religious repression and recovery.
