About Leah Benson

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in private practice in the Tampa Bay Area. I received my B.A. in French and  Bachelor of Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin in 1994.  In 2001, I earned an Ed.M. and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University in New York. I have been practicing psychotherapy and psychology in the Tampa Bay area since 2001.

During graduate school, I worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings with adults, adolescents, and children.  I helped people with problems that created recurring relationship challenges for them. I also worked with young and middle aged adults experiencing life transitions, and with adolescents and adults at a psychiatric hospital.

In addition to my current work with individuals, couples and groups in private practice, I have worked with children and adolescents at the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch, provided intensive in-home therapy for individuals and families in the Florida Department of Children and Families dependency system and worked with families who have adopted children both privately and from foster care. My areas of expertise include depression, anger, confidence issues, teen issues/parent coaching, behavior problems in children, adoption, couples concerns, sexuality and identity issues.

I am a licensed practitioner of NLP, Dr. Richard Bandler Certification, and I am currently in training for certification as a Bioenergetic Analyst with the Florida Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis.

I am a member of the Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society, the Suncoast Mental Health Counselors Association and the Florida Society for Bioenergetic Analysis.
