Clinton Power shares how to avoid the 5 biggest and most common SMS relationship mistakes. SMS, which is short for Short-Message-Service, has exploded in popularity worldwide, with over 6.1 trillion messages sent in 2010. This is expected to increase to over 10 trillion messages per annum in 2013. SMS allows mobile phone users to send short text messages of under 160 characters to each other. There are obvious advantages to this style of communication including convenience, low cost and speed. There are also numerous pitfalls that I am frequently hearing about from my relationship counselling clients.

As flirting via text message has become de rigueur, some sacrifices have been made: grammar, salutations, sarcasm, irony, capitalization and other hallmarks of pleasant communication have all fallen on their swords so that we can be less inconvenienced. To keep things even more convenient, we've added short alpha/numeric/punctuation combinations so as to show digital emotion rather than conveying an actual thought or idea. But, despite being the dominant gender in terms of conducting an entire relationship via SMS, dudes are generally not down with emoticons.

Single Women Are Better Texters

Women are good at flirty text messages but they might prefer a love letter in return.

According to a new study, single ladies are better texters. Researchers at the Indiana University analyzed flirty text messages sent between singletons at a screening of the Italian version of TRL and found that the women's messages were more creative. But once you're in a relationship, text messages might not be the way to go, no matter how good they are. A recent survey reveals that 70 percent of women and 53 percent of men would rather receive a love letter than an electronic message d'amour.
