Nevada Senator John Ensign admits to affair, vacates leadership position.
Nevada Senator John Ensign has admitted to infidelity. The second-term Republican Senator, whom many thought may be grooming himself for bigger things, had an affair with staffer Cynthia Hampton. While the affair ended nearly a year ago, there is much speculation as to why John Ensign made the admission. Some sources think blackmail may have been the reasoning and others think it may have been garden-variety guilt. This is another blow to the GOP's hopes of rebounding.
Sotomayor is divorced, Hispanic, female and the next Supreme Court Nominee.
President Obama, after a weekend of reflection, nominated Sonia Sotomayor as the next Supreme Court Justice. The seat opened when Justice David Souter retired, and if confirmed by the Senate, Sotomayor's presence will help the Court reflect the demographics of this country more accurately.
If confirmed, Sotomayor may be best known, demographically speaking, as the first Hispanic (Puerto Rican) and the third woman to be a Supreme Court Justice, but she also stands out because she is single, divorced and has no children.
With gay marriage on a roll in other states, New York lawmakers will address the topic, too.
Is New York ready for same-sex marriage? Gov. David Paterson thinks so.
Paterson announced a proposal today to allow same-sex marriage in the Empire State.
DC Council also votes to recognize gay unions from other states.
Hot on the heels of last week's Iowa Supreme Court ruling that a ban on gay marriage there was unconstitutional, Vermont has also legalized same-sex marriage.
The New England State, which in 2000 became the first in the country to adopt civil unions for gay couples, came to the decision today when the Vermont Legislature successfully overrode Governor Jim Douglas's veto of a bill allowing gay couples to marry.
With this decision, Vermont becomes the first state to legalize gay marriage through a legislative action, rather than a court ruling, and the fourth state overall to legalize same-sex marriages. The other states, in addition to Iowa, are Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Sure, it's barely related to love and relationships but it's a friggin' election year so bare with us. It looks like some folks in the Department of the Interior were getting some fringe benefits from contacts in the oil industry.
