proposition 8
The 2010 census will count same-sex couples & the state department to increase gay rights.
Despite the ratification of California's Proposition 8 and the brouhaha surrounding Miss California Carrie Prejean, things have been looking up lately for people interested in marrying someone of the same gender (and those just interested in protecting the right to marry whomever you choose but still down with hetero-normative relationships... like Brad Pitt). And, for the most part, the East Coast has been leading the way. With their stuffed shirts, ascots and comfortable shoes for yachting, residents of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and Iowa are the states that find gay marriage most agreeable*.
But the new … Read More
The gay marriage ban in California was not overturned by its Supreme Court.
According to the LA Times, California's Supreme Court has voted 6 to 1 to uphold the controversial Proposition 8 addendum to California Law. The law narrows the definition of marriage to a single man and a single woman.
The bill was part of the November 4th (Super-duper Tuesday for Barack Obama backers) ballot and featured millions and millions of dollars in donations from both sides of the gay marriage issue.
While it comes as very little surprise that the court upheld the law (which overturned a previous court decision codifying same-sex unions), they unanimously agreed … Read More
Carrie Prejean is rumored to be dating Olympic hero Michael Phelps.
Not that anyone watches the Miss USA Pageant any more, but you may recall a flap about Miss California. It had something to do with Judge Perez Hilton (no, it is the same one you're thinking of who draws ding dongs on people and tries to out gay celebs) being really unhappy with her answer regarding gay marriage. After which, the entire country came unglued (we kid, most people said, "Meh, wake me up when Angelina Jolie adopts an alien.")
At any rate, Miss California (Carrie Prejean) has since been called all sorts of mean names (one of … Read More
A man decides he needs to save his marriage. And it's not the drinking, philandering and humiliations that threaten his marriage, it's gay marriage. Despite it's message, we think this may have actually been an anti Proposition 8 item (i.e. pro gay marriage).
No more Mr. Nice Gays.
Last week, tens of thousands of people across the country came out in support of same-sex marriage after California voters passed Proposition 8, which nullified previously legal unions. From New York City to Minneapolis, D.C. to San Francisco, gay marriage supporters turned out in huge crowds to protest the ballot initiative that passed in California on Nov. 4.
Mormon temples have been the site of many protests, as the faith rallied around Prop 8, although some in the gay rights movement are quick to point out that Mormons should not become the only scapegoat.
Comedian Wanda Sykes even came out … Read More
More Proposition 8 fighting, sex toy fever, new IVF screening, and adoption.
It's a brand new week but some things just haven't changed. San Francisco is not, as you can imagine, happy with the Proposition 8 results. They plan on taking this all the way to the State Supreme Court. Which is sort of where it all started. The Governator is involved now too, per KCRA.com
Some things don't sit well with the people at Babeland. Like how is it fair that people who voted last Tuesday got discounts on sex toys but some people couldn't use that discount because there's no store in their village, town, or municipality? … Read More
California's gay marriage ban threatens to undo thousands of recent unions.
With the passage of California's ban on gay marriage, parents around the state can rest assured that their children finally are safe. Or, so supporters of Proposition 8, which will adjust the state's definition of marriage to exclude same-sex couples, want them to think. For months before yesterday's vote, pro-ban messaging called on voters to "do it for the children."
From Protectmarriage.com, a site in support of the ban:
It protects our children from being taught in public schools that "same-sex marriage" is the same as traditional marriage, and prevents other consequences to Californians who will … Read More
Dems win big, Proposition 8 may pass, cuddle parties, and GPS lingerie.
Okeedokee then, a new party will be sitting in the White House come January 20th. Congratulations to Barack Obama. Also, the Dems also picked up a few seats in the Senate, so change of some kind is inevitable. We're not sure what happened to the House, who can keep up with the Commoners anyway?
It wasn't all good news on the liberal voting front, as of now California's Proposition 8 (banning gay marriage) looks to pass. The LA Times reports that the 'Yes' votes are slightly ahead of the 'No' votes with 92% of the ballots tallied. We're … Read More
Dresses for military brides, recycled sex and positions on gay marriage.
Maybe today's election will provide a bounce for the slow economy. If not, our homies Em & Lo have a suggestion: recycling sex. It's easier and more time-saving to just hook up with an ex instead of going to all the pain of finding someone new, from New York Magazine.
And while everyone is saving money on their sex, it looks like the girls from Essex, England are trying a new angle, no condoms. Per the Metro, women from Essex (the equivalent of a Valley girl) are more than 3 times as likely to have unprotected … Read More
The Governator is against Prop 8, men are suspicious, and jail for adultery.
Finally, a lube has taken the initiative to break out from the pack and become America's most trusted lubricant. According to Boinkology, Wet Personal Lubricant is going Web 2.0 with a MySpace page. Your move, K-Y.
On the subject of pushing things through, Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared his position on all of California's Propositions according to the Sacramento Bee. And he is against Proposition 8 (and is therefore for gay marriage). You can take the Republican out of Hollywood but you can't take the Hollywood out of the Republican. Way to follow your conscience, Governator.
