polygamy
A politician wants government officials to marry single moms.
Good news, for all the single mamas in Kelantan, Malaysia: a state representative wants local legislators and magistrates to marry you. According to AFP, the chairwoman of the state's family and health committee thinks that dudes with good, stable jobs should up their "quota" for wives. "Quota" meaning the number of wives these stable dudes are cool with having.
The problem that requires polygamy as a solution is that there are too many unmarried, single mothers in Kelantan, and throughout Malaysia. As you likely know, Malaysia is a largely Muslim nation (55 percent of its 28 million residents). … Read More
A modern-day polygamist explains her side of the story.
"Non-traditional." A popular catch-all phrase that seems, in common usage, to mean anything that differs from the mainstream. It also describes a large portion of my life.
My upbringing was entirely unremarkable, and certainly included nothing of this sort. I was first introduced to such alternative relationships in college when a female friend of mine and I knowingly decided to share the same boyfriend. No, not a threesome, just going out with the same guy. It was partially a matter of convenience, and partially the fact that we were close friends. We both liked him very much, didn't want … Read More
The male selfish gene, forbidden love and food-fighting.
Love and relationship coverage has all but come to a hault today, since Madge is taking center stage. Today's the day for Madonna and Guy Ritchie's official divorce, according to the Associated Press. Read more about their relationship in YourTango's Celebrity Love Blog.
Madge's divorce isn't the only order of the courts today. GoErie.com reports that police charged a 19-year old man in Florida with domestic battery after he threw a sandwich at his girlfriend while she was driving, nearly causing her to loose control of the car. A conviction may clarify that food-fighting … Read More
A Nigerian polygamist is in violation of Sharia and has to makes some cuts.
That is the harem of harems. A Nigerian fellow was recently ordered by religious authorities to divorce 82 of his 86 wives, per News24.com. The man is 84-years old so the clerics possibly suspected some sort of numerology was in play. Mohammed Bello Abubakar is a retired teacher and preacher (not necessarily a preacher or a feature, though) and has said that the Koran never specifically forbids having more than 4 wives. We think he should probably check out the Sunnah, sometimes they sneak some good stuff out of that book.
It probably goes without saying, but … Read More
The Texas polygamy story is just getting started.
Here goes. The polygamy compound in Eldorado, Texas (the Yearning For Zion ranch) is getting lots of buzz these days. The Mormon sect, known as FLDS (), was raided weeks back. Ugh, when people start throwing around the words 'compound' and 'sect,' you know that public opinion is squarely against you. The siege was triggered by a 16-year old girl calling a Texas family center to say that she had a baby, was pregnant with another, and was suffering abuse by her middle-aged husband (more on this in a moment).
So, the authorities swoop in on this tip. They … Read More
Ginnifer Goodwin explains the differences between fiction and real life.
Ginnifer Goodwin, one of the stars of Showtime's Big Love, was asked by People to contrast her show with the real-life 'polygamy compound' situation in Texas. She essentially said that her character dresses a little better (not 'compound chic') and that their brand of polygamy is "a sugar-coated version" and maybe not terribly accurate. So, TV shows value entertainment over accuracy? Damn it all. Damn it all to hell. This sugar-coating is big talk from a person that spells 'Jennifer' with a 'G' and an 'I.' We once went to high school with a girl … Read More
A look at our polygamist past and if it would work today.
OK, we’re basically going to mail this one in. Andrew Greeley, a writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, has a tongue-in-cheek proposal to keep rich and powerful dudes out of hot water: polygamy (and polyamory for the rich). How do we know it’s tongue-in-cheek? Because he said so in the article. His premise is that powerful men have been enjoying their status to get tail since the dawn of mankind (indeed-y we’re pretty sure it’s the basis of culture and hard work) and that when everyone (we point the finger at you, society) is on the same page it … Read More
Sir Michael Gambon has quite an interesting and multifaceted private life.
There was a lot of brouhaha about the announcement a few months ago when JK Rowling (England’s richest woman) said that the Hogwarts Headmaster was into dudes. We’re not sure if she was looking for a shot of attention after closing down the Harry Potter franchise or what. But it appears that there is definitive proof to the contrary. Fine. The actor who plays him, Sir Michael Gambon (not Michael Chabon, he wrote Wonder Boys) is the opposite of gay. So not gay, in fact, that he might be suspect.
The UK paper the Daily Mail should … Read More
