Miss Representation: How The Media Messed Up Women's Self-Images

A new documentary airing tonight, Oct. 20, explores how the media inspires negative body images.

In Miss Representation, a new documentary airing tonight on OWN, Jennifer Seibel Newsom probes the distorted way the media portrays women—and how it affects girls. The director tells Jessica Bennett such depictions damage self-image.

Ladies, the Media is Doing You Wrong

Ladies, the Media is Doing You Wrong

I haven't been watching much TV lately. Might as well. The media sucks at portraying women.

The only time I watch TV is when I'm in the living room when my roommate decides to be a couch potato. Soccer, football, baseball, etc etc--the media seems totally atuned to the male demographic. Is that a problem? I hear a loud "hell naw" from the guys. That's easy to sit back and agree with, especially if you're a guy. But it's hard to discredit the increasing power of media on our way of thinking. Cite interesting statistics here.

Nora Ephron: "Playboy Did Not Change The World"

The writer and filmmaker opens up about her disdain for Hugh Hefner's empire and "The Playboy Club."

I have for many years been puzzled by the persistence of Hugh Hefner. Why is he still here? Why does anyone write about him? Why does anyone quote his remarks about his own cultural relevance as if they are anything but wishful thinking?

How Models and Actresses Impact the Body Image of Our Girls

It’s talked about a lot. Comments about the size and weight of celebrities abound in tabloid magazines, on television, radio, and within various social media sites.  And the comments have a theme. They are too skinny. They appear drastically underweight and sickly. A recent picture showed the normally healthy looking Katie Holmes with her rib bones protruding through her middle section as she frolicked with her daughter poolside. Model Candice Swanepoel was recently criticized for showing up at a Victoria Secret promotional event looking frail and pin-thin.

Lila here: Can someone please tell me what the hell is wrong with our society?  We allow children to watch violent movies and play even more violent video games, but we don’t give them healthy role models for sexual activity.

4 Steps To Your Own "Happily Ever After"

Author Michelle Cove helps single women get real about happily ever after.

Ask most girls under age 10 what "happily ever after" looks like and they'll talk to you about meeting a man (probably a prince) and kissing him at the royal wedding. Ask a grown woman what "happily ever after" looks like and she'll probably tell you the same thing. If you respond, "No, what does it look like to you NOW, as a grown woman," she'll stare at you blankly. I know this is true because it happened to me repeatedly while I interviewed women around the country for my book and documentary, Seeking Happily Ever After. No one ever told us that we could redefine happily-ever-after for ourselves—and that doing so might make us, well, happier. So here for you is permission to do it, and four ways to go about it.

Consider a Little Media Break

Symbols and images are known to evoke deep emotional responses in all of us, which is why watching television shows including the News can be so addicting. Here I discuss that the choices you make regarding which shows to watch may actually be lowering your vibrations, and thus affecting you in unhealthy ways

Do Abortion Ads Glamorize Sex?

The Mail Online thinks so, but we think they might be overreacting.

The Mail Online states that abortion clinic ads are "sexy," that they "encourage promiscuity," and that they "send the wrong message to women" (conveniently, they don't mention men). Among these "wrong messages": that "sex is fine."

Are Breasts The Source Of Self-Confidence?

Miss California's pageant-funded boob job.

No, they're not real. That'd be the answer to your question if you had been wondering about Miss California's Barbie-doll-like cup size. The runner up to Miss North Carolina for the Miss USA title (who has been no stranger to the headlines lately) was outed Friday when a Miss California pageant official admitted, during an interview on "The Early Show," that the pageant paid for Carrie Prejean (Miss California) to receive breast implants, reports Huff Po.

Has the media gone too far with the Friends star?

Some members of the media think that Jennifer Aniston is using her relationships to get press. While we've heard of people using the media's fascination with celebrity relationships to further their career but never anyone as classy as Jennifer Aniston. Also, we never really heard this rumor buy we did hear a rumor about the rumor so, Jennifer Aniston is pretty cool in our book.
