Don't turn your pretty friend into "the enemy," here's why!
Ryan asked us this morning what kind of men we prefer to date. I want to talk about what kind of girlfriends we like having. Okay, let's be honest—you know which of your friends are beautiful. You know when your friend gets more guys than you.
I have some beautiful friends. And I like looking at them. Period. I do not feel competition (but then again, an ex once called me the "least competitive person on the planet"). Some women feel threatened by their prettier peers. Why do we do this, girls? I know that insecurity plays a … Read More
Why ladies can't help their sensitivity and men can't help their aggression.
The more us ladies claw the corporate food chain, enjoy casual bedmates and brush up on our Sunday football stats, the more likely we are to think we can maneuver in this world just like men. With more beautiful bodies, of course. Women Are Confusing Flirts
After all, the old stereotypes of the sewing circle opposed to the hunter are just products of sophisticated socialization, no? We can be steely and cut-throat. We can be aggressive and unfeeling.
Can't we?
Perhaps, yes. But new research proves it may just not come as easy for us girls.
Sorry.

Compromise, support, sacrifice: professional athlete couples teach us about making a marriage work.
Sore muscles, grueling training and abundant egos are the pitfalls of a professional athlete's otherwise exciting career. For those married to fellow pro athletes, add to the list long stints of time apart, living in different time zones and competing playing schedules. The compromise and support these relationships require is something we can all appreciate, even if our own relationships seem ordinary next to the hectic lives of athletic superstars.

A night in with a few board games can get your motor going (and it's free).
This economy is a real bummer. I was counting on the president having it fixed by now. I suppose that's why we don't only give presidents 100-day terms. At any rate, since times are bad (from a financial standpoint) and I have lots of space to fill, I've started to suggest things that you can do which are fun and free (note: I can't guarantee anything is free). This time around, we'll get the juices flowing with a little healthy competition.
Competition, within the context of a relationship, comes in three primary forms: civil war, Man Vs. Machine and … Read More

Catfights among columnists. Laura Ingraham takes a stab at Meghan McCain. [DivineCaroline]
Women are discouraged from being ruthless and competitive, but there's also the stereotype of the bloodthirsty woman screeching and clawing her way to the top, backstabbing any other female who gets in her way. … Read More
A little friendly competition may increase intimacy between partners.
"Quit playing games with my heart," sang the Backstreet Boys, in 1996. They clearly hadn't been involved in any long-term relationships—playing games with your spouse may actually be a sign of a strong bond. After being together with someone for a long time you start to develop an inner world—inside jokes, funny nicknames, code words and games—these are understandings that outsiders don't share: a special, partnered intimacy. In today's New York Times Michelle Slatalla writes about the game she and her husband play. They live in a small town populated people they often see while taking walks.

Find out what sky diving and black jack have to do with sex.
Is there anything us mortals do without the hopes of getting lucky afterward? Seriously.
We've long known when men want you in bed, they'll fan out money, status, and bling like a peacock's plume to prove how big, bad, and capable they are. Now social scientists at Florida State University say risk-taking is all part of the biological attraction game as well. Dashing through traffic or going sky diving are just other ways for men to instinctively compete with one another and lure in the ladies.
Huh. Really? So procreation is behind a bunch of dudes narrowly cheating death by … Read More
One man sheds light on some of the oldest male stereotypes.
There are a lot of unfair and untrue male stereotypes floating around. At the very least, the stereotypes that are true are seriously misunderstood. As a guy, I've experienced first-hand what it's like to be stereotyped and it's not a good feeling. Unless you are an attractive pro athlete who is somehow clumped in with a group of Nobel Prize winning scientists, but this is rare. While it's not fun to be stereotyped, stereotypes often exist because they offer some kernel of truth. I don't speak for dudes everywhere; these are just my personal thoughts about these male qualities. … Read More
Are smart, successful women intimidating? We asked men what they think.
Christine is a 41 year-old New Yorker. She has competed in 11 marathons, runs her own consulting firm and is working on her Ph.D. She is also single. Christine recalls, "I recently had a male friend tell me, 'Chris, men just want a woman who's going to be home and be a great wife and mother. You're too intense. Look at you, you're going 100 mph all the time, no guy wants that.'"
"I am attractive, in gosh-darn good shape, fun, great sense of humor, full of energy and life, smart and ambitious," says Christine. "You would think these are … Read More
Tourists arrested in oral sex competition.
Greek police arrested nine women and twelve men on the Greek island of Zakynthos after participating in an oral sex competition.
What such a competition entails, we're not sure. But we're wondering if it's all the rage on Greek party islands (the beaches! the sun! the hot Greek men!) or if this is a one-off.
The women -- all Brits -- were paid to participate in the competition, Reuters reports, which was videotaped and posted online. The ladies face prostitution charges, while the men were charged with encouraging obscene behavior. The paper's mum on all the juicy details we … Read More
