New news in gay marriage around the world.
According to the Miami Herald, it is a good day indeed to be gay in California. Seriously, California gays haven't been this excited since that first guy matched short shorts with roller blades. The California Supreme Court said that domestic partnership is not an acceptable substitute for marriage and by a 4 to 3 margin ruled that gays should be able to get hitched.
As you would expect, some anti-gay marriage groups are pretty unhappy about this. They pledge to get enough signatures to put a constitutional ban on the fall legislative docket. The Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has twice … Read More
Gay marriage news from Greece, Australia, and the Lutherans.
There are some happenings in gay marriage today.
1: Two women plan on marrying next week in Greece. They’ll be Greece’s first gay wedding (note: Spartan men and residents of Lesbos didn’t marry each other, just enjoyed each other’s company). The two plan on exploiting a little known loophole in a 1982 marriage law that does not specify man + woman = marriage. Good work, ladies. This was a no-brainer for the state whose motto is “Live Free Or Die.” Some 183 licenses have been issued since the office opened on December 10th. One hundred and seventy-one of them were issued to New Hampshire residents.
We’re actually a little surprised that they’re allowing out-of-staters any chance for a civil union. There have been two high-profile divorce cases involving lesbians in Oklahoma (click to … Read More
From The Irish Times The Government's pledge to give legal recognition...
The Government's pledge to give legal recognition to same-sex couples is "virtually meaningless", the Labour Party has claimed.
Eamon Gilmore says Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan's promise last night to have the heads of a Bill to legislate for civil partnerships ready by next March kicked the issue off the agenda into "the indefinite future".
Speaking in the Dáil today, the Labour leader said the Government rejection of his party's Civil Unions Bill represented a climbdown on what was on offer during the previous programme for government under then-minister for justice, Michael McDowell.
