Advice for dating someone of a different religion.
Religion has never played a large part in my life. I grew up celebrating "Christian" holidays like Easter and Christmas, but in America, these days are so mainstreamed and commercialized, they almost seem secular. I've never minded not having a religion, and I like the fact that because I'm a blank religious slate, I can approach new religions without prior assumption. I've learned Hindu traditions while in India, marveled at the Muslim mosques while in Indonesia, caroled in a Carmelite monastery, and recently visited a Zen Buddhist center for meditation. Having lived in the open-minded Bay Area for most of … Read More
A five-year marriage with no sex: the true story of a divorced virgin.
I was twenty-nine, single again after a five-year marriage, and a virgin. When I met my now ex-husband Mike, I had just turned 21. We met at small Catholic liberal arts college, and even though I no longer believed in Jesus, the Saints, the Bible, God, really any of that. I was a virgin then, and I was a virgin when we divorced.
When I was younger, I'd wanted to stay pure, and had managed to protect my virginity despite all the high school guys I'd went out with, and the ten or so guys I'd dated in … Read More
Spiritual exploration can be lonely and divisive when one partner's not on board.
When my husband and I got married, our divergent religious backgrounds were the last thing on my mind. From the start, we were in full agreement that we would blend our Jewish and Christian traditions into an unstructured cornucopia of customs and holiday celebrations. This all-inclusive philosophy presented little conflict, and we were compatible in our religious laziness.
But, eventually, I became a restless wanderer with unresolved questions about my soul's purpose on this earth, and I longed for a deeper, more personal relationship with God. My husband remained content just where he was and this became a dividing … Read More
Why does one Jewish woman date Christian men around the holidays? To get her Christmas fix.
Up until I was six years old, my family celebrated Christmas. Although both of my parents are Jewish, our family was not particularly religious. They just thought Christmas was a fun holiday for kids. I still fondly remember my Miss Piggy star ornament sparkling atop the tree. Ahh, memories. In 1984, we moved to a new town in a new state and joined a synagogue. As December rolled around, there was no tree, just a menorah in the kitchen and a pile of Hanukkah presents in the corner of the living room. Don't get me wrong: The latkes were tasty, … Read More
Planned Parenthood holiday gift certificates rile anti-abortion groups.
Indiana and Illinois Planned Parenthood affiliates are offering gift certificates for their services this holiday season.
Planned Parenthood reps told the media the credits are being offered to encourage women to maintain their reproductive health. With the economy as is, healthcare will likely be lower on one's list of priorities. The organization told FoxNews that, in Indiana alone, nearly one million people are uninsured or cannot afford basic coverage.
Pro-life groups are speaking out against the so-called "coupon for abortion" being offered during the season of a Christian holiday. "They can and will be used to … Read More
eHarmony settles case out of court; agrees to launch gay-friendly dating service.
Conservative dating site eHarmony will launch an offshoot dating service catered to gays called Compatible Partners, the company announced today.
According to the settlement of a New Jersey discrimination lawsuit, the site must launch by March 31 of next year and be marketed in gay and lesbian media outlets. In addition to a large dose of pride from gay supporters, the man who filed the suit, Eric Mckinley, will receive $5,000 in damages. He filed a formal discrimination complaint against the site in 2005; a similar case against the company is underway in California. Whether or not the New Jersey … Read More
The relationship between divorce and Christianity is fraught with tension, faith, and war.
The Bible comes down hard against divorce. “I hate divorce, says the Lord God of Israel," states Malachi 2:16. In Matthew 5:32, the Bible clearly lays down the line: "But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery." Yet, despite these strong edicts, in 1533, Henry VIII demanded that the Catholic Church give him a divorce from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon so he could marry his new (and hopefully fertile) squeeze, Anne Boleyn.
Until then, Henry VIII had … Read More
A resource on racy sex for the Christian set.
The "Christian" label carries with it a number of stereotypes these days, and a passion-filled, borderline-nymphomaniac sex life is not one of them. A blog dedicated to active, passionate sex between married Christian couples might begin to change that.
Christian Nymphos provides female-focused advice and tips to couples looking to spice up their sex lives while staying within the tenets of the Christian faith. For a population where racy, explicit language and topics are often taboo, posts about role-playing, oral or anal sex might come as a shock to some. User comments reflect relief in finding … Read More
Kirk Cameron is back in a Christian-themed relationship drama.
The new Kirk Cameron is tearing it up with his new flick Fireproof. While some of the reviews from the mainstream media have not been terribly positive (The Onion gave it an F and a pretty solid scolding) the movie has been warmly received in the Christian community earning an estimated $17,000,000 in its first 2 and-a-half weeks (against a reported budget of $500,000).
While a religious-y film about a fireman wouldn’t usually get our attention, the film is mostly about rescuing a troubled marriage. The filmmakers partnered with an outfit called Fireproof … Read More
