Do you live in one of "The Best Cities for Singles?" [Yahoo! Shine]
There are 200,000+ more single women than men in the Manhattan area! (Sheesh! Ladies: if it feels especially hard here in Gotham, now we know why). The map also makes it clear why my friend thought dating in NYC was such a breeze as compared to SF: There are A LOT more single men out there … Read More
Should you uproot life as you know it for the sake of a relationship?
Pulling up stakes for a partner's career is never easy. After her husband asked her to move to Madrid, Jill Johnson began talking to other couples, and to the experts, about the costs and challenges of relocation.
I was six months pregnant, and had just finished decorating the nursery in our new house in Connecticut, when my husband called me from work one day and said, "Will you do me a really big favor?" He sounded a tad too earnest to be referring to a trip to the dry cleaner. "Uh, sure, what is it?" I inquired. "Would you move to … Read More
Colleen and her fiance agree that moving is a possibility.
I’ve always been kind of spontaneous. A few years ago, I was living in Atlanta, and in a span of two weeks, I had accepted a job, packed up my house, sold my car and moved to NY. Just as suddenly a few years later, I moved back to Atlanta to be with Fred. I like change, excitement, breaking out of the routine.
Recently I’ve been getting the itch to move somewhere again, and it hit me: I can’t just pick up and go any time I want to. I’m engaged. I have another person’s feelings and future to consider. … Read More

We made it. It is done. We are moved (note that moved and unpacked are not synonymous), the cats are settled in, life is slowly returning to normal. Between the work gala I had on Tuesday and the move, I’m pretty sure that was the busiest week of my life, and boy am I glad it’s over. Frank and I even borrowed a car and went to Ikea on Saturday to procure the furniture items we required to inhabit our new apartment.
So it’s pretty much cake from here on out. There are some small glitches—no cable or internet yet—but generally … Read More

So: packing. That is where we are this week. And not just packing, but the point in packing where it all seems completely hopeless and impossible. Every move has this moment, I’m certain of it. Moving sucks. The agreement on this point is universal.
What I think is interesting, though, is people’s responses to hearing about the progress Frank and I are making (or not making.) For whatever reason, I’ve been much more socially busy than I should be given the work I’ve got to do before the truck shows up on Thursday morning.
Between the party we hosted for engaged friends … Read More
Cross-cultural love is easy to start but harder to maintain.
They say that fate has a hand in every connection. But the night my husband and I met, fate seemed to be cutting things awfully close. Richard lived in England, and was in New York City for a week’s vacation.
I was in graduate school at Columbia University. It was the ultimate coincidence that we happened to be in the same bar, a little dive called the Subway Inn on Lexington Avenue and 60th Street. We fell easily into conversation, and by last call I was pretty sure that this was the guy … Read More
Gail Sheehy discusses her marriage to Clay Felker, the first editor of "New York" magazine.
Yesterday my husband walked into our day-old home, a condo furnished with hundreds of boxes from our former house, and he didn't smile. Moving isn't easy.
We had pulled up stakes from a place we loved. Our roots were still raw.
Clay Felker and I have been through many moves. Painful as they were, some of them saved our relationship. One may have saved his life. This year we will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, a milestone that amazes friends who had to play Rolodex tag with each of us during the 17 years of our turbulent premarital relationship. We … Read More
Get a dog, meet a man. But what if your man doesn’t like your pooch?
I had a feeling it would work. And it didn't take long. I had only been living in New York for about a month when my investment paid off. It was a rainy July day. I had been working at home all morning. As lunchtime approached, my stomach started grumbling and my puppy needed a walk. I decided to kill two birds with one stone and set off with the dog to a nearby deli. Both of us arrived drenched. A tall, older guy asked, "What kind of dog is that?"
"He's an Italian greyhound," I said. "His name is Puccini."
"Oh. … Read More
