Big Love
Tiffani-Amber Thiessen's baby news reminds me of my all-time TV crushes.
As you may know, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (now just Tiffani Thiessen, I reckon) married a guy named Brady Smith in 2005 and now, according to LimeLife, is pregnant. In Hollyweird you're not really taken until you have a kid or have been together for 12 years, so this pregnancy thing is pretty devastating to a lot of us. The news has me recalling my various TV crushes and what they taught me. Here they are in chronological order:
I'm 9 and she's Danica McKellar. My feelings about The Wonder Years' Winnie Cooper are known. When I was a boy, … Read More
New couple spotted at the Emmys!
The Emmys weren't just a showcase for how awesome Neil Patrick Harris is. The awards show was also the prime Hollywood hookup market of the fall. E! Online reports that Jason Segel, whose CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother was nominated for Best Comedy Series, and Chloë Sevigny, one of the plural wives from HBO's Best Drama Series nominee Big Love, were spotted making out at HBO's afterparty. Reps for the two declined to comment, but we know it is on.
Chloë and unfeasibly tall Jason were spotted kissing in a secluded corner of the HBO … Read More
Friday Night Lights' Tami Taylor is TV's best wife. Who are the other 9?
I was catching up on a little Friday Night Lights last night (thank you NBC, thank you Direct TV) and old Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) was being a wee bit manipulative. And I thought, "Why is TV's best wife, mother and principal giving beleaguered Coach Taylor such a hard time of it?" Obviously, she was trying to get her way. In addition to giving me a greater appreciation for the show's subtly, it makes me remember that in real life, good wives (and husbands, boyfriends, fiancées, etc) sometimes pull some shady business. And that got me thinking, who are … Read More
These TV characters will turn your bachelorette party inside-out.
Last week I gave you a rundown of who the best television characters to invite to a bachelor party are. Bachelor party invites are a sacred responsibility, but bachelorette party invitations are an even riskier proposition. One crabby invitee can ruin the whole deal. And one snub can threaten to bring down the whole wedding. But these following 10 TV characters would be great additions to any bachelorette party. Some are of the throw-back-a-shot, ride-a-mechanical-bull variety and some may surprise you.Robin Scherbatsky (How I Met Your Mother): Robin is as close as the show has to a female … Read More
A modern-day polygamist explains her side of the story.
"Non-traditional." A popular catch-all phrase that seems, in common usage, to mean anything that differs from the mainstream. It also describes a large portion of my life.
My upbringing was entirely unremarkable, and certainly included nothing of this sort. I was first introduced to such alternative relationships in college when a female friend of mine and I knowingly decided to share the same boyfriend. No, not a threesome, just going out with the same guy. It was partially a matter of convenience, and partially the fact that we were close friends. We both liked him very much, didn't want … Read More
From Homer Simpson to Eric Taylor, we've got the best husbands on TV.
Have you ever noticed that most TV husbands are dirt bags or at least seriously flawed? If they don't have a mistress then they are emotionally distant. If they're emotionally available then they may secretly (or not so secretly) be gay. You don't have to be Flannery O'Connor to know that sometimes a good man is hard to find (on TV). Here are the top 10 husbands that are currently airing shows.
Bob Vance (The Office). Vance Refrigeration is the finest HVAC operation in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area. And Bob Vance is married to Dunder Mifflin saleswoman Phyllis. The 2 … Read More
Ginnifer Goodwin and Chris Klein stop dating each other.
According to People (no just any old people, but People the magazine), Ginnifer Goodwin is back on the market. She, up until quite recently, had been dating a handsome, young man named Chris Klein. You may know Klein as "Nova" from the film American Pie. If you recall, his character dropped his v-card to Mena Suvari but he'd learned to be a gentleman along the way and chose not to kiss and tell. He also played Reese Witherspoon's over-matched rival in the dark comedy classic, Election.
Per People, the 2 have been dating for … Read More
Swingtown's portrayal of open marriage is nuanced and realistic.
Tristan Taormino has a cool column in this week's Village Voice about open relationships on TV. She discusses three shows that depict non-monogamous marriages, E!'s The Girls Next Door, HBO's Big Love and CBS's Swingtown and wonders what would happen if the star of ABC's The Bachelorette were polyamorous.
Taormino's assessments of Hugh Hefner's relationships with his three wives ("it's more a commercial for the Playboy brand than a show about alternative relationships") and Big Love's polygamous coupling ("the interactions here are often complex and … Read More
The Texas polygamy story is just getting started.
Here goes. The polygamy compound in Eldorado, Texas (the Yearning For Zion ranch) is getting lots of buzz these days. The Mormon sect, known as FLDS (), was raided weeks back. Ugh, when people start throwing around the words 'compound' and 'sect,' you know that public opinion is squarely against you. The siege was triggered by a 16-year old girl calling a Texas family center to say that she had a baby, was pregnant with another, and was suffering abuse by her middle-aged husband (more on this in a moment).
So, the authorities swoop in on this tip. They … Read More
Ginnifer Goodwin explains the differences between fiction and real life.
Ginnifer Goodwin, one of the stars of Showtime's Big Love, was asked by People to contrast her show with the real-life 'polygamy compound' situation in Texas. She essentially said that her character dresses a little better (not 'compound chic') and that their brand of polygamy is "a sugar-coated version" and maybe not terribly accurate. So, TV shows value entertainment over accuracy? Damn it all. Damn it all to hell. This sugar-coating is big talk from a person that spells 'Jennifer' with a 'G' and an 'I.' We once went to high school with a girl … Read More
