Go back to Impress His Mother This Holiday Season

You'll be the ultimate daughter-in-law (or should be) with one of these hostess gifts in hand.

The standard gift: A candle.

Impress her with: A Jo Malone personalized candle or perfume. Gather any shred of information from your boyfriend about her preferences (favorite flowers, time of year, vacation spots, colors, etc.), then log on to jomalone.com and chat live with one of their stylists. They'll point you in the right direction after asking a few questions.

What you say when you present it: "Bob said you love vacationing on Martha's Vineyard. I found a candle that will hopefully bring back some memories, with hints of sea kelp and aged beechwood."

I got my BFs mom some notecards from etsy.com. She loved them. Etsy is awesome.

Whatever you do, don't bring food. That gets up in her bidness.

I got a bfs mom a cd that had some bluegrass music on it because I heard she loved bluegrass. well, apparently they said "damn" in one of the songs and she was SOOOOO offended. and passive aggressive about it. Obviously that didn't work out.

Candles always work. Sure, it's a little unoriginal, but women like candles. They have entire stores at the mall that sell nothing but candles, clearly someone is onto something.

i would probably give her the needlepoint journal. she's crafty and would love something like that. although, if you have to buy your MIL's love maybe there's something wrong???

If you give her a cookbook, will she be offended? like you think she should cook better or am I reading too much into this?

what about if your MIL is totally cheap and doesn't like it if you spend money. like my sister's MIL. She just likes it when my sister shows up and she wouldn't mind if she had a baby :)

I love this. The blossoming tea one is perfect. My FMIL loves tea and doilies, so she'll probably love this.
