Go back to 15 Common Divorce Mistakes

Getting divorced? Heed this advice to help avoid common mistakes.

Not paying attention to taxes

If you think your ex did a number on your finances, be prepared to meet your worst enemy. Without keeping a close eye on taxes, your divorce could lead you into a financial train wreck. "Many times, after one spouse takes the house, he or she realizes after a few years it's unaffordable—and then gets clobbered on the taxes," says Gayle Smith, family lawyer and author of Divorce and Money. "And if one person takes certain stocks, be sure to consider capital gains taxes if you are going to liquidate." The cost of taxes should be factored into every monetary decision you make as you write up your divorce settlement papers.

Do you think it is more common simply because divorce was not very accepted back in the day? Or because couples aren't willing to work through whatever problems they are facing? Do you think most marriages that fail could have made it to the end if the two paid attention to what was wrong and tried to fix it?

Probably both. And because divorce law changes have made it easier to get divorced - you don't need a cause or the other person's agreement.

Sex with your ex?

If your ex is stupid enough to come back to you after she left you in the first place...then maybe she deserves to be left by you this time. Yeah, I agree, sex with the ex is a bad idea...no wait....I dont agree with that. SEX with the ex is great, hell sex with anyone is great...but getting back into a relationship might just be a bad idea.

Marriage is not an easy thing or divorce for that matter. Children will always suffer from parents action. Just like what happened to Jon and Kate Gosselin, having 8 children with a broken family will never be easy. The second it was announced that Jon and Kate Gosselin – the über-annoying TV couple with 8 kids – had an announcement, there was a Jon and Kate announcement spoiler. The Jon and Kate announcement spoiler indicates that they are probably going to, if they haven't already, file for divorce. Multitudes might cry out for them to say it isn't so, but this season of their show has been a bit of heartbreaker, what with infidelity rumors and all manner of things serious people could care less about. The recent controversies about the show have boosted its ratings, but if the Jon and Kate announcement spoiler is correct about the announcement, they might be heading for payday loan stores before too long.
