People say the most ignorant, insensitive things to recently-divorced women.
I won't go into the dirty details, but trust me when I say that my divorce was the saddest and most painful thing that's ever happened to me. What made it worse? The really dumb things that people would say when I told them my husband and I were no longer together.
The new Google+ gives users 10 relationship statuses to choose from. "Divorced" isn't one of them.
Have you gotten the all-mighty Google+ invitation yet? The latest in social networking, Google+ includes circles and "plus ones" ... and boy is it so fun. I think? It's confusing. I don't really get it. I signed up this weekend and still have very little clue how to use it, but hopefully someone will be able to teach this old dog a new trick or two. Anyway, I thought I'd start my foray into Google+ by setting up my profile. Seemed like an easy enough thing to do— answer some basic questions about myself, upload a photo, and viola!
But there was one part of this "easy" profile set up that got me a little confused. Under the "Relationship" part, there's a drop down from which you choose how you define your status.

"I can't believe you don't want to fruit cake at Aunt Martha's!"
"But we ALWAYS go to the church's Messiah Sing-along! I already made plans for the kids and I to go!"
"I understand you're Jewish sweetheart, but I didn't think that meant you wouldn't want us to have a Christmas tree."

Ready to split but cash-strapped, some couples are finding divorce too expensive.
As the economy slows the cost of a divorce increases. Job loss. Mortgage defaults. Slowing housing market. They all factor in when going through a divorce. Is divorce becoming a luxury? With the high price tag on divorce, some couples have gone to the extreme. Many couples continue living together until they can afford a divorce. Some couples even reconcile because they simply cannot afford the cost of a divorce. One attorney recalls a client who moved into the computer server room in his office because he couldn't afford a new place. Many couples today are legally separating until they iron out their financial issues and settle debts.
