RELATIONSHIPS AND CHILDREN
It is interesting how one can use words but never realize their meaning. Having just celebrated our Independence Day, I wondered about the word independence. What does it really mean? I’ve been told all my life that I’m “independent.” It seemed like the context of it was helpful when I was a child because I wanted to be able to do things for myself. Our first experiences of our ability to master our environment, begins when we can say, “Mommy I do peeped all by myself,” then run to show what we did and where we did it.
Question: I have been with my boyfriend for over two years. He often complains about my seventeen-year-old daughter. When we’re together she will sometimes tease him or say something that bothers him, and he will get up and leave, then call me and tell me why he left. I have spoken with my daughter and she doesn’t feel that she’s done anything wrong. What should I do? ...Cherise
“You’ve got to accentuate the positive.” (Song by Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer, 1944) A positive attitude (or even a less negative attitude) has the potential to change lives. This old song lyric came to mind while reading The Roller-Coaster Years – Raising Your Child Through the Maddening Yet Magical Middle School Years (Gianetti & Sagarese). This is a fascinating book for parents of 10-15-year-olds, and for parents who want a gl
Question: My question is a little unique. I am considering remarriage to a wonderful man, however; I have a daughter who is legally blind, and she has a beautiful 3- year-old daughter. If I remarry, I would be moving out of state. My daughter is not anywhere near being self sufficient and I am not going to just abandon her. My fiancé has said that he would wait as long as it takes for me to help my daughter become independent. Neither my fiancé nor I have plans to break up if this process does not move as fast as we had hoped.
In light of the recent tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT, it's past time to take a look at what causes these tragedies to occur. I've heard a sharp public call for stricter gun control but that won't stop the violence. A person driven to kill will find whatever means are available to him at the time. Stricter penalties won't do it because a person in a murderous rage isn't thinking about consequences.
Dating isn't easy when you don't have children. Add some little ones to the mix and you've got a complex situation.
That got your attention, didn't it? The expression "F-bomb" (you know, the "F" word that we write f*#@ in public) is now an official word in the dictionary. It reminds me of a parent who said how upset she would get when her son "dropped the F-bomb". She'd react in such a strong, negative way --which is understandable.
Whatever. Fine. I don't know. Do those phrases just push every button you've got? It used to make me crazy when my (now 27-year old) son answered 'cool' to everything, including incredibly sad news. It took forever for me to understand that 'cool' just meant 'I heard what you said.'
giving yourself a break as a parent Inherent in the art of parenting is the feeling – at least the occasional one – of guilt. Putting Oreos and the remote in front of the t.v. in the morning for your 4-year-old’s “Special Breakfast with Sponge Bob” while you sleep in is one of those times that guilt is warranted.
Every daughter needs a male role model, even if he is a stand-in father. How daughters relate to males is based on what they observe and experience with their own fathers or father stand-ins. Let's take a look at fathers and celebrate how a father's love protects his daughter. Since father's are doers, let's also celebrate what they do.
Does your child's behavior, the choices he or she makes, and fears about how he will turn out weigh you down, making you feel like it's all somehow a reflection on you? When our kids don't act in ways we think they should, it's natural to feel anxious and responsible; we're only human. But, when we do this, we stop seeing the boundary between where we end and where our child begins. We become fused with them.
