Could I Be Pregnant Or Is It Just My Irregular Period?

I have a very irregular period, and it's been irregular since I started getting it at age 11, I turned 16 in January and it has been starting to frustrate me. My November 09 period happened in the last twoo weeks of the month, and then December was an anaphase for me. I went 42 days without a period and finally got my next period on the 9th of January 2010. My following period occured on February 4th two days early which meant my next one should fall somewhere in the first week of March. Sadly, it never arrived; though the last week in February I had some spotting for four days, and on Monday March 8th I had some discharge which made me believe I was ovulating.

In mid-March(the 10th-15th), I visited my long distance boyfriend who lives in the States(myself I live in Canada) and we had intercourse using a few different methods of birthcontrol. Over our visit together we had sex 5 times, the first 3 times we used regular lubricated condoms(Trojan ENZ Lubricated) and the Encare Sperimical Insert with Nonoxyl 9. Those three times my partner did not climax. The last 2 times, we ran out of the regular condoms and decided to use the spermicidal condoms(Trojan ENZ Spermicidal Lubricated) we had on hand. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I had some previous irritation from the Encare(itching and the like, nothing major) we did not want to chance causing a further, more serious irritation by using both the spermicidal condoms and the Encare inserts. My partner did climax these two times, and pulled out just as he began both times. Out of all five of our sexual incounters, the condoms did not break or slip, and we both checked them all for holes and there were none. As well, we never had any penetration without a condom on. My problem is, that my period has not yet occured today on the 16th of March and I am very worried. I fear I may be pregnant but I have no idea since my period is so irregular. I feel fine, no cramping or uncomfortable pain(a feeling I usually get the day on or before my period starts). So I would really like some guidance in this, and please no judgement. We felt that it was the right time for both of us and that was solely our descion to make. Overall, what is the chance that I am pregnant or am I overreacting and is it my irregular period?

Get a prego test, then double check with a doctor.

Planned Parenthood is a great place to go. I went there to get on the pill when I was 17. It's free and confidential so your mother doesn't have to know. Back then I paid 5 dollars for one pack of pills and they gave me a year supply and a full female exam (not sure how much has changed since then because it's been many years). If your mother is ignoring your health concerns you definitely need to take steps yourself to figure out what's going on. Get yourself over there, regardless of if you or your friends have a car, take a bus or see if your friend might have a trustworthy mother that could take you. Do not let your health/well-being take a back seat here. Especially if you are sexually active you need to have yearly female wellness exams. There's always a reason not to do something but this is a must. If you're worried about going, see if a friend can come with you and support you. They may even give you the Pill for free. If you don't have an allowance see if your boyfriend can send you some money to help out with it. It is normal to have an irregular period for a few months when you first get it but not consistently irregular for years. There could be something else going on. One of my friend's had many cysts in her ovaries which needed to be removed surgically and caused infertility. You need to have this examined by a doctor.

I wish I could see a doctor, but being only 16 makes that difficult for me. I do not have a drivers liscence, none of my friends do either, and I can not tell my mother because she would flip out on me. I mean, she's supportive and all, but she thinks I should wait until I'm 18 like she did. As well, I've discussed my irregularity with her and she says its nothing to worry about it's normal for all girls. She has experiance, Well, I don't really believe her one year of irregularity from when she first got it at 16 until she turned 17 counts as experience where as mine has been like this four five years of my life. She also thinks birth control will mess up my hormones and it's not a good idea. In the end, even if I managed to see a doctor, I can't put them on my insurance, and I have no money to pay them with. I know of a Planned Parenthood in the area, but getting there is difficult.

And overall, the only reason I posted this here was to get a different view of the situation to see if I was just overreacting to what was happening. I also wanted to hear peoples experiance with such things, and if seeing a doctor or taking a test was critical.

Sorry to comment again. Just noticed I mis-communicated and don't know how to delete a comment in order to fix it. I meant that it sounds like you want a second form of birth control (not want a more reliable form of birth control). Although the pill is very reliable for some, I'm not sure about your case because of your irregular periods. I know a lot of women who have irregular period issues, in most cases their periods don't stop and they have irregular bleeding all month long, but the pill has been known to fix the problem. Since you used a condom every time and it never broke, you're probably fine but only a doctor can tell for sure. And I didn't mean my last comment in a negative way at all. I simply meant that the only way to get a definite answer is to go to a doctor which you definitely should do for your irregularity anyway.

Also, just wanted to note it's kind of silly to ask people on a discussion board if you might be pregnant or not. Only a doctor would be able to give you an accurate answer.

It could be either case. I'm guessing it has more to do with your irregular period. I think you should go to a doctor and try to get on birth control pills. A lot of women who have irregular periods go on the pill just to regulate their cycles and it usually works. Plus, it sounds like you need a more reliable form of birth control anyway. What does your gynecologist say? If you are sexually active you should be having yearly check up exams anyway. Have you ever mentioned your irregular periods to your doctor? You definitely should. If you're worried about being pregnant you can take a pregnancy test but with your irregular periods you probably won't get an accurate result. It's best to see a doctor.
