Reeling from a breakup? There's an app—or a website, or an online service—for that.

Think New York residents have the most casual sex? Think again. Las Vegas? Keep guessing.
Who knew that online dating got its start in the 1960s on New York's Upper East Side? Project TACT, the first-ever computer matchmaking system, was designed by New York accountant Lewis Altfest and his friend Robert Ross. The two were inspired by the Parker Pen Pavilion they came across at New York's World Fair in 1964, where a giant computer selected pen pals for anyone who wanted one. All they had to do was "fill out a questionnaire, feed it into the machine, and almost instantly received a card with the name and address of a like-minded participant in some far-flung locale—your ideal match." Sound familiar?
Infographics make things easy for us. That’s why we love them. OkTrends, a site that gathers data from profiles on the dating site OkCupid, has created a merger of two things everyone loves — sex and infographics. This set of charts covers everything from how many times a week students expect to have sex based on their tuition to how often Twitter users masturbate. Oh, and some vegetarian-friendly sex slang is in there somewhere. That’s something we can get down to/spend half an hour scrolling through.
And if populations ratios were to level out, then the average monthly messages received by white people would go down while it would go up for latinos, asians, and blacks, with asians receiving the majority of messages. In the chance that asians became the predominant race, 74% of white senders would send to asians, with 98% of asians, 71% of latinos and 66% of blacks doing the same. So, at least in online dating, is race relations just a numbersgame?
One of the reasons free online dating sites are so popular is that paid sites sound like a ripoff. Who wants to shell out hundreds of dollars to meet the love of their life? Last spring, OkCupid argued that people should never pay for online dating because there aren't enough people willing to pay a fee for dating services. Since fewer people means fewer matches, online daters should stick to free sites that may have a larger base of active users. Although OkCupid are right in that people hate paying for websites, others argue that matches on paid dating sites will take the service more seriously since they'll want to make the most of their financial investment. The Big Think cites a study published in Current Psychology that tested this idea on a group of undergraduates last year.

Happy belated birthday, eHarmony! On Monday, Aug 16, the dating site turned 10 and, to mark its anniversary, launched a new ad campaign entitled "Love Begins Here." This new approach is neither the first or the last dating sites have launched in order to keep up with their success. From inception to today, here are the six major changes that occurred over the last decade of online dating.
The good folks at OK Cupid (the dating site) did a study correlating which mobile device their users upload photos from. They then cross-referenced that data (those data, if you will) with personality tests such as the "Slut Test" and realized that iPhone users have more sex partners than users of the BlackBerry or the Android.
