The couple claims that they are going to "work on the future" of their relationship.
What went wrong between former California Governor (and action hero) Arnold Schwarzeneger and his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver? In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, the couple, who have four children, ages 14 to 21, confirmed that they were splitting up.
"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," read the statement. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.
"We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives. We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public." CONTEST CLOSED! Maria, 55, is reportedly moving out of their Los Angeles home, while the couple, who married in 1986, figures out their next step. Prior to the announcement, the former first lady of California posted a message on YouTube, asking viewers for advice about going through major life transitions, and, although she did not hint at the breakup of her marriage, she was not wearing a wedding ring in the video either.
"It is so stressful to not know what you're doing next," she said. "I'd like to hear from other people in transition...How did you get through it? What were three things that enabled you to get through your transition?"
There's no doubt that Arnold and Maria's marriage has had their ups and downs. In 2008, they both endorsed different candidates for president. The Terminator star, who won the California governorship as a Republican, supported his party by endorsing John McCain, while Maria, a member of the political dynasty that is the Kennedy family, supported the now-president Democrat Barack Obama. The couple also recently went through another transition. At the beginning of this year, Arnold ended his seven-year term as governor. The Schwarzeneggers also celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last month, although, how much of it was a celebration, rather than a painful realization that their marriage has problems, is left to question.
Either way, the statement they gave to the LA Times left open the possibility of a reconciliation, so we are rooting for the couple to work things out!
