Hollywood is built around the glories of romance, and the Academy Awards have frequently rewarded charismatic on-screen couples. But celebrity couples haven't fared quite as well; only a few actors and directors who paired up off-screen have both won Oscar gold. This year, Kathryn Bigelow is up for a Best Director Oscar for The Hurt Locker; she'll go head-to-head against her ex-husband and Avatar director, James Cameron, who's already won the award for Titanic. One of the industry's favorite May-December romances belongs to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, whose marriage is still going strong despite a 25-year age difference. Because of—or maybe despite—the age discrepancy, they've only made one film together (Traffic, released in 2000, the year they were married), and they didn't appear as a couple. The intense Paul Newman and the classy Joanne Woodward were perhaps Hollywood's ultimate power couple. From the time they married in 1958 until Newman's death 50 years later, they starred alongside each other in a dozen films, and Newman directed Woodward in a handful more. Still, Anjelica Huston managed to keep him tied down (though they never officially married) for more than 15 years until their 1989 split. The legendary Sir Laurence Oliver is one of the most-nominated actors of all time; he won three times (Best Actor for 1949's Hamlet and two honorary awards) and was nominated a stunning 10 more times.
