What You Need To Know About Taking Care Of Yourself Emotionally

For starters: It's not selfish.

You take care of everybody else. So, why aren’t your taking care of yourself? Do you feel it’s selfish? Or, you just don’t have the time. Whatever, the reason, taking care of yourself is a priority. If you don’t, you will grow angry and resentful.

Part of emotional self-care is staying in the present. It’s easy to focus on your regrets about the past, or constantly worry about the future. When, in reality, you don’t have control over either. It also keeps you away from this present moment.

Not to say that it’s not alright to learn from the past, but you need to let go. You can plan ahead, but don’t have anxiety over it. This will help keep your mind open for change.

Change is constant. When you are more accepting of it, you will have less stress.

Here are 10 ways to practice emotional self-care:

1. Practice self-compassion daily.

This means go easy on yourself. It’s easy to beat yourself up for mistakes you have made in the past. Go back and nurture that person. I’m sure you had a good reason for doing the things that you did.

2. Become aware of what you say to yourself.

You have a voice inside your head. It’s easy for it to be negative. Ask yourself, what would happen if you said this to others? Would they still be your friend?

3. Allow yourself to receive.

Sure, you like to give. But, receiving is just as important. Start by saying thank you to a compliment. The next time a friend offers to pick up the check when you go out to lunch, thank them and receive the gift.

4. Tap into your creative side.

Maybe it’s dancing, painting, or cooking. Whatever it is, set aside some time for it. Make sure it is something that you enjoy.

5. Allow yourself to make mistakes.

No one is perfect. This is an unrealistic expectation. You will always feel disappointed. Make sure the people around you, accept that you make mistakes.

6. Make time to rest.

Sleep is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. Make sure you have enough time to sleep. Don’t cut back on sleep to work more, or do more around the house.

7. Develop an attitude of gratitude.

Write down 25 things you are grateful for. Start with a roof over your head, and a warm bed to sleep in.

8. Practice mindfulness.

This will help you to be in the present moment. Set aside time each day. I like to practice mindfulness in the morning. But, you can practice it at night, if you’d like. Start with 5 minutes and work your way up.

9. Be true to yourself.

This means, don’t say yes when you mean no. This is also known as setting boundaries. There will be a big payoff to this.

10. Ask for help from a mental health professional.

This is someone that can help you through the bumps of your journey. You can learn and grow from this, in the long run.

Feel free to add any of your own. You need to add at least one of these to your day, now. Don’t let your life take over. We all go through highs and lows in our life. This will help you get through the lows in your life, and make it much better.
