For Women, Sex Gets Better With Age—Right, Betty White?

As women age, their sexual desire declines -- but they're still incredibly satisfied in the bedroom.

Women like Betty White know that aging doesn't have to be something we dread. Yes, body parts may sag, faces may wrinkle and hairs may turn white, but getting older promises much more than a change in appearance — it promises high sexual satisfaction, too.

Yes, although ladies sometimes experience a decline in sexual desire with age, it doesn't mean they're disappointed in the bedroom. In fact, a recent study of older women revealed that 61 percent are pleased with their sex lives, and much like fine wine, it gets even better with age. The study, led by researchers at the University Of California San Diego School Of Medicine, involved 806 women who provided information regarding their sexual activity, desire and satisfaction. The average age of the women involved was 67, and most were past menopause.

Unfortunately, older women also reported having less sex overall, but 67 percent of those who did have sex achieved an orgasm most of the time. Even better, the oldest women in the study were among the most likely to report reaching orgasm.

Of course, some women (40 percent, to be exact) admitted to feeling little to no sexual desire at all, but that's not to say they aren't sexually satisfied. Interestingly, half of the women over aged 80 claimed to almost never feel a desire for sex; however, they did report feelings of arousal, lubrication and the occasional orgasm despite that lack of drive.

If you're wondering how someone can feel aroused when they experience no primal urge to do the deed, the researchers explain it like this: "These results suggest that women engage in sexual activity for multiple reasons, which may include affirmation or sustenance of a relationship." So, although older women aren't always eager for a dance between the sheets, once you get them there, they have plenty of fun.

So no need to dread getting older, because sex is most definitely like a fine wine: It gets even sweeter with age.
