I winced a couple of times while watching The Guilt Trip when I heard Joyce Brewster, the endearing yet nagging mom, say word for word some of the things I have said to my own, grown sons.
Parents, in all honesty: Have you ever wanted to just close your eyes and disappear for a while? It's not an uncommon feeling. We all fantasize about doing severely irresponsible things. No judgements on parents who sometimes want to run screaming after a particularly trying day! But acting on those impulses? That's kind of unusual.
Pregnancy can zap energy. After all, growing a human takes a lot of work, even if you're just sitting on the couch. Simply walking from the bathroom to the kitchen can completely take the wind out of you. Here are some practical tips to help you stay at the top of your game during the holidays.
We all know that men are visual creatures: they're suckers for long legs, ample curves, a great smile...mom's cheekbones?! According to a new study out of Finland, men are more likely to marry women who resemble their moms. Researchers compared photos of 70 married couples’ parents and significant others to come to this conclusion — and it's taken me just under 30 seconds to become totally creeped out by the news.
Guilt is a very powerful emotion, just like all the emotions, if you are not aware of its power and tend to feel often, you may not even realize that it is the driving force behind everything you do and how you do it. Apparently for women it is more likely to rear its head than it is for men and this is usually because as women we are conditioned to be nice and play nice.
No more saying "yes" to every request that comes your way. Let your drama queen friend cry on someone else's shoulder. Set boundaries with your kids, mate, boss and anyone else who crosses the line. Let go of the rescue role. Most importantly, trade some of your daily to-dos for some personal pampering pleasures. Here is a short list of ways you can feed your feminine essence.
Mothers all over the world have been taking control of weddings since weddings began. Often times, it is one of the last "parenting" roles that mothers provide. As a result, some mothers take everything a bit too far and end up hijacking the wedding planning process. Although it seems like a daunting task, there are several effective strategies for dealing with this sensitive issue.
How long do you breast feed your baby? Will it make your boobs hang down? Will it limit sex if your breasts leak during foreplay? Will it mean that mom and dad can never go out on a date without bringing baby along? Will my husband still think I am sexy when he sees me breastfeeding? What happens when I go back to work?
According to a study by psychologists Christy Starr and Gail Ferguson at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, which was published in the journal Sex Roles, young girls value the concept of "sexiness." Specifically, 60 girls were each shown two dolls — one of which was dressed in sexy clothing while the other doll was dressed in a loose yet trendy outfit. The girls were then asked to select the doll that they wanted to look like, the doll that they already looked like, the doll that they wanted to play with and the doll that looked like she would be popular in school.
Oh no, just when I thought that I had heard and seen it all I am made painfully aware that I haven't. A British mother named Chantal Marshall is apparently perplexed that one of her five daughters is currently not in favor of getting breast implants. Apparently her four other daughter have conceded but 14 year old Britney is not in favor and the mother is bewildered. The youngest daughter of the clan would like to focus on her studies at this point rather than on her cleavage. This youngest daughter of the family may be breaking with family tradition and yes it may cause a rift.
Despite the wear-and-tear on a new mother's body, the lack of sleep after a baby is born, and the constant screams of the newborn, science has found that most women are ready to get it on long before the end of the doctor-recommended six-week waiting period.
A mother and son's relationship directly affects yours and your partner's relationship, too; the way you handle certain situations as a couple, the way you make decisions, the way you manage your household.
In a couple of days it will be my birthday. I have noticed over the years that most people seem to be in one of three camps when it comes to celebrating this day. One birthday camp is all about it! Lets celebrate in any and all ways possible. Another camp is pretty nonchalant. They go about their day as usual with a few special touches to mark the occasion. Yet another camp wants nothing to do with noting the day for themselves. As anyone who knows me well, or even casually, will tell you, I fall very firmly in birthday camp number one!
When my daughter was born, I was determined to be a breastfeeding, co-sleeping, baby-wearing, cloth diapering, hippie mama. Nine months later, the only thing that'd stuck was the cloth diapers. I had just started my daughter on formula, she had been in the sling exactly five times and never once slept in her fancy little co-sleeper, which I returned to the store. And yes, I felt like a failure.
