HEROES

Most people may never meet their heroes.  I am bless to say that I have raised one of mine.  I am emotional and giddy that this weekend, I will get to see my hero cross a major milestone.  I will be able to hug him and maybe even get a picture of the two of us.  He has inspired me to be a better person.   His vision, strength and determination are my beacons for living my best life.  He is as big to me as any famous person.

  Teasing and bullying are part of the rough and tumble competition for attention and status among siblings and peers. Sometimes we get used to it by the time we are 30, sometimes not. But for children just entering the social jungle, it can be quite a shock. Some think that physical bullying is worse than teasing.  But emotional abuse by cruel teasing can be very damaging and the young child does not know what is happening to him emotionally, where as it is easy to explain that Tommy hit me.

Being a hero means doing what’s right even when it puts you in harm's way. Take Katniss Everdeen, everyone's favorite fictional heroine; yes, she's a character rather than a real person, but often in the Hunger Games series, we see Katniss putting herself in danger to save others.

Out of respect to the families who were affected by the Aurora, Colorado shooting, I challenge each of us to dig deep into our souls and share our compassion with these families. Across the globe, we are all deeply affected by this senseless loss of life and its tragic aftermath. How can we make sense of something that doesn't make sense? How can we move forward knowing even a movie theater is not a safe place? The Dark Knight Rises is a great example of the mythic hero's journey. The hero's journey is one way to develop your inner strength. You can't attain inner strength by depending on others; you can see others as mentors, but the task or call is yours to figure out. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" is the motto for good mentors.

Being a Counselor and meeting with many people, I became aware of the reluctance of people to share how their sexual lives were going. Once upon a time I witnessed one of the toughest, macho, ex-marine construction foremen I know do a beautiful thing. When our accountant got married, her wedding was in another state and thus no one from here was invited to the wedding. This man made a point to find out her favorite color and the size of their bed, and ordered some very fine monogrammed linens for her. He arrived at her office with a large cardboard box. He put it on her chair and told her gruffly that someone delivered the box to his office by mistake.

Between the secrets, the long disappearances, the costumes in constant need of washing and mending and the occasional ambiguous "sidekick," there is some serous limitations to how effective of a spouse a superhero can really be.

OMG. Mark Wahlberg got married and so did Ali Larter... just not to each other. The actor and Entourage producer/ inspiration married long-time girlfriend and mother of his three children Rhea Durham over the weekend. And Ali Larter (NBC's Heroes) married Hayes MacArthur whom she met on the set of Stoned Age. Larter, Wahlberg and MacArthur have all appeared in Episodes of Entourage.

Rumor has it that post-breakup, Hayden no longer wants to work with Milo on Heroes.

Two of the heroes of the TV show Heroes have just stopped dating (each other). Per the gossip grapevine, Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia decided to breakup. He's career-focused and she's just a girl who wants to have fun. Jesse McCartney may have been peripherally involved. We're just happy that we won't have to say their names in the same sentence any more and that relatives on TV are no longer dating in real life.

Star of televisions Heroes and many mediocre films, Ali Larter, finally decided to celebrate her engagement. The actress has been engaged to actor and not a legendary general, Hayes MacArthur, since December of 2007 but has had no time to put together an engagement party in the past 10 months. Hmm. The 2 met on the set of a film called Homo Erectus. Good times. No whipped cream bikinis were harmed in the consummation of this relationship, only loin clothes.

Star Trek actor George Takei married longtime boyf Brad Altman over the weekend. Takei is another in a short line of stars to get hitched since California courts have legalized gay marriage. And this is just one in a long line of examples of Takei being on the cutting edge of social reform.

Oh, the young turks are talkin' nuptials. Per Harper's Bazaar via People, Jessica Biel thinks that marriage would be pretty neato. And while she and my man Justin Timberlake reportedly don't have anything in the works, she says she's looking forward to the prospect one day. And motherhood. And 'having it all.' And all that entails. Time will tell if all that fun goes down. It would be sort of the ideal situation. JT makes enough money that Jessica Biel could sign onto passion projects and treat acting as more of a hobby than a job.
