DIY Nutella® Recipe (Homemade Chocolate-Toasted Hazelnut Spread)


Make my fabulous copycat recipe of the famous commercial spread! Makes 3 cups


 — 2 cups raw, unsalted hazelnuts, Available at gourmet shops, health food stores, and select supermarkets

 — 1 (14-ounce) can Sweetened Condensed Milk

 — 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips (2 cups) Note: it is important that you purchase high-quality semisweet chocolate chips for optimal flavor results


Preheat the oven to 350◦ degrees F.

Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet, and bake the nuts, for about 10 minutes, or until the hazelnuts are toasted a light golden brown and are aromatic. Stir halfway through the baking time so that the hazelnuts toast evenly.

Lay open a clean kitchen towel on a work surface, and using a spatula, transfer the hot hazelnuts to the towel. Fold the towel over onto the hazelnuts so the hazelnuts are completely enclosed.

Being careful, (the hazelnuts will be hot) rub them vigorously to remove the papery skins. Try to remove as much of the skins as possible, but if there are a few remaining that is alright. Discard the skins.

Note: If your food processor blade is not sharp, you may not achieve a butter-like nut paste, instead a paste with flecks of toasted hazelnuts — your DIY Nutella® will not be as silky smooth as my recipe version — but don't be discouraged, though the texture will be different, the superb flavor results are the same.

Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a medium-sized, heavy saucepan, add the chocolate chips, and set the saucepan over medium-low heat. Top 20 Female Celebrity Food Quotes

Cook, about 4 minutes, stirring constantly, until the chocolate just melts and the mixture is well blended and smooth and remains glossy. (If necessary, if the mixture is getting too hot, remove the saucepan from the heat during the cooking time to prevent the chocolate from scorching, while continuing to stir constantly.)
