Stick Through The Tough Stuff or Duck and Run?
By Tambre Leighn. Posted on .
We've all heard the words a thousand times or more. "For better or for worse." But often when relationships hit the hard stuff, people find it easier to quit...to duck and run, than to stay put and work things through. There are, of course, situations that require leaving immediately such as being in danger. For that, you need to get immediate professional help and support.
I'm speaking to those times when we are dealing with emotional (communication, unmet needs, intimacy, etc.) or practical issues (financial, medical, etc.). The things that make life hard, zap our energy and, when they are not resolved eventually feel like they are consuming us. When we make a commitment to a partner, and especially when we design a whole ceremony around it and declare we'll be there for each other, it's easier to imagine the "better" part and more difficult to imagine the "worse". But life happens and it includes both experiences.
Will you stay or will you go? Going is about living in survival mode. Who doesn't want to flee the feelings of being stuck, paralized and like nothing is working? Staying is about finding a way to get tools to help you work through the tough stuff. When you do, you access the experience of thriving.
