Did you know that our bodies were not meant to function in a state of toxic stress?

Did you know that our bodies were not meant to function in a state of toxic stress?  We are wired to handle some stress but it is dangerous when we spend most of our time downloading the stress hormones like Adrenaline, Cortisol and Norepinephrine into our bodies on a regular basis.

According to Lissa Rankin in her book, Mind Over Medicine “When this hormonal cascade is triggered by a thought or emotion in the mind, such as fear, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activates, thereby stimulating the sympathetic nervous system to race into overdrive, pumping up the body’s cortisol and adrenaline levels. Over time, filling the body with these stress hormones can manifest as physical symptoms, predisposing the body to disease over time.”

Today it is our responsibility to understand that the body and mind need time to move from the state of stress response to the relaxation response on a regular basis. When the body is in a state of deep relaxation it can and will repair itself. Finding ways in your life to relax and choose practices that you enjoy is essential to living in joy and loving your body.

For the purpose of exploring what might be relaxation practices that are beneficial to you, experts often recommend exploration and creativity. If we use meditation as an example, while you might not enjoy sitting on a meditation pillow in silence for twenty minutes you might enjoy using guided meditations as a starting practice.

It really does not make sense to force yourself into a meditation practice if you are suffering the whole time you are trying it, which will then cause more stress hormones to be released into the body!

Walking your dog or listening to music, practicing yoga, incorporating breathing exercises, running or dancing are all examples of ways to create relaxation in the body. These and many other relaxation tools allow your sympathetic nervous system to get the rest it needs to function in healthy ways and serve you well. Loving your body is a freedom to behold and allowing the stress hormones to dissipate is a gift to give yourself on a regular basis.
