About Peter Lambrou
Peter T. Lambrou, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical and health psychologist, a specialist in anxiety, work stress, weight loss, and emotional management. Dr. Lambrou is the past Chairman of Psychology at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California where he has maintained a private practice since 1987, and he is an instructor for the University of California at San Diego. He is a Certified Medical Hypnotherapist by the American Psychotherapy and Medical Hypnosis Association, of which he is past president and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Stress, and a Diplomate in Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Lambrou is also the author of the best-seller, Self-Hypnosis: The Complete Manual for Health and Self-Change which has been translated into eight languages and the award-winning, Instant Emotional Healing: Acupressure for the Emotions, published by Random House. Dr. Lambrou has been an invited speaker to numerous professional organizations including the International Association for Asethetic Medicine in Mexico, the annual Symposium for the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, The Teton Wellness Festival, as well as appearing on numerous radio and TV program around the country. Julie had an unusual situation. A former airline pilot with a fear of flying. Now retired she and her husband had suffered deep financial losses in the economic downturn and their pensions were no longer adequate to maintain the life they'd planned. This became a stress overload that took Julie by surprise in the way it affected her life. She began to develop fears and phobias that never before existed. more
First a fear of beign poor and homeless (not likely), then fear of heigths (even looking out 10th floor windows was scary); fear of driving on the freeway; and when she was to fly a short distance to visit their daughter and new grandchild she became fearful of getting on the plane. That was IT for Julie, time to get help.
We began with intensive relaxation training, something she'd never learned. Then we focused on her thinking patterns that contributed to her fear (lots of 'what if' thinking for example was changed to 'what is' to keep her in the present). Elements of self-sabotage and neutralizing the emotional trauma of her financial losses was important to relieve the overall feelings of vulnerability and feeling 'unsafe at any speed' or height or place not in her control. The process went quickly and in a few months Julie had her life back, interviewing for a fun job that she got that put her back with people and some money to help offset the losses.
