The lightbulb that has needed changing for two weeks.
The bag of clothes you’ve been meaning to donate.
The pile of papers on your desk.
Balancing your checkbook.
Losing those last 10lbs.
What have you been meaning to get to for days, weeks, or months that you’re just NOT dealing with?
In coaching, we call these kinds of things ‘tolerations’. They’re the things you put up with, even though you’d really rather not. They drain your energy and make you feel low and exhausted - even if they're just minor little things.
You feel the energy suckage every time you look at the papers on your desk. Ugh.
Every time you flick the closet light-switch and the light doesn’t come on. Sigh.
Every time you pass by the bag of clothes you've been meaning to donate, or don’t know how much money you have in your checking account, or your ‘fat’ jeans feel tight. Ay-yi-yi.
We often adapt to tolerating certain things rather than deal with them. It’s as though we start believing that we don’t have a choice. “I don’t have time to deal with it,” or, “It’s not that bad,” or, “Money stuff is too complicated”. We start to believe our own hype when, in truth, many of the annoying little tolerations that plague us could probably be zapped in a very short period of time.
What are you tolerating?
A cluttered home? A hole in your sweater? Chipping paint? Dead light bulbs? Extra weight? Messy finances?
How would you feel if all of those tolerations were zapped? What would your life be like if there were none of these nagging, annoying little drains on your energy?
Can you zap them?? What would it take?
Here’s the challenge: This week, identify 2-3 small things that you are currently tolerating and, for the love of Pete, just deal with them. Try not to overwhelm yourself in the beginning. Choose things that can be zapped in a matter of minutes, and see what it does for you.
Please leave your comments and let me know how it goes!!
