Three Ways To Deal With Clutter, Even When You Are Resisting It
How I reconcile my push-pull relationship with clutter. Ways to tackle a new habit to let it go.

Is keeping a habit like giving in to the ruts in a dirt road, where vehicles find it easier to plow along in the mud than to go a foot to the right or left and make a new trail that will keep the car unmuddied? Why am I willing to be mud-spattered by the clutter and
resulting chaos that keeps me from being in better control of my projects? Frankly, after the talk with Pat, the two hours last night, and this essay, I am convinced it's JUST a bad habit. I am not inherently incapable of disposing of boxes of stuff. I can make other projects a higher priority, but unless I change this habit of holding on to stuff, it
will be my constant companion for the rest of my life. Aargh! All right, all right! I got it! And today's email had a quote reminding me that "The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not on our circumstances." - Martha Washington

I know, I know, having 50 boxes isn't what galls me or weighs me down; it's giving in to feeling overwhelmed. And I know that I am capable. And golly, when I get this one under control, I wonder what wonderful new stuff I'll bring into my life. (Read my "Comfort of Completion" at http://communicationcoaching.net/relationship_articles.htm).  I hope you’ve thought of a habit you want to change, and will take small steps till you’re there.

 

These are the three things that are working for me, slowly but surely.

1) I have an accountability buddy. I report to her each week on my intentions and what I've completed, as she reports on the project she is committed to. When either of us feels stuck, we call and get support for a few minutes and get back to it.

2) When my bedroom and office look orderly enough that I can show them to my lover or my very organized friend, I absolve myself of any other requirements that day. The next day I again create a cleared desk and do the sorting necessary to get to a feeling of contentment.  When I am dealing with another high priority, I cut myself some slack about the neatness and about the necessity of locating anything I want in a very short time.

3) I read the daily subscription from www.abraham-hicks.com.  From the Law of Attraction standpoint, it is important to focus on what we want, not on what we don't want.  So I visualize spacious cleared closets; I remind myself that there IS a part of me that is orderly and organizaed; and I remember to be grateful for all that is going just fine in my life.  My peacefulness is more important to me than anything else.
