About Michael Crocker
For over 20 years Dr. Michael Crocker has specialized in providing psychotherapy that addresses the symptoms and underlying issues related to trauma, cross addiction, hypersexual behavior, sexual inhibition, intimacy anxiety, gender disorders and sexual orientation confusion. He treats both men and women using the modalities of Individual, Couples, and Group Psychotherapy.
Most importantly, Dr. Michael Crocker uses a psychodynamically oriented treatment approach that is informed by Attachment Theory and Neuropsychology. These theories help clients understand how their history has resulted in particular styles of attachment and how to change and improve the way they attach, connect and experience intimacy. With this model of treatment, the client can find his or her way to improved emotional awareness, increased interpersonal efficacy and enhanced healthy connections with others.
In treating issues of sexual compulsivity and cross-addiction, Dr. Crocker uses a unique treatment model that incorporates attachment and object relations theory. Treatment with Dr. Crocker can incorporate twelve-step and CBT models as needed, although these modalities are not required to experience effective treatment through his treatment model. The model of treatment that Dr. Crocker provides is not formulaic and is instead individualized and based on the needs of the client. His model is significantly different that the curriculum based model of Certified Sex Addiction Therapists. He purposely provides a collaborative, non-directive approach with his patients that helps them heal the underlying issues related to their compulsivity and addiction rather than address just the symptoms. Dr. Crocker’s Journal Article on “Out of Control Sexual Behavior as a Symptom of Insecure Attachment in Men” is published in The Journal of Clinical Social Work and the Addictions, Volume 15, Issue 4, 2015.
Dr. Crocker also provides consultation, education and supervision to other clinicians in the field. His teaching has included graduate level teaching of clinical social workers. He has also taught psychotherapists at The Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and The National Institute of the Pyschotherapies Program in Midtown Manhattan. He has presented at the NASW addictions conference, The NYSSCSW, Long Island SCSW and Staten Island SCSW conferences, The Mental Health Professionals in Law Enforcement, The Suffolk Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, The EGPS Conference and a number of the SASH annual conferences.
