I’m Proclaiming 2015 To Be The Year Of The New Cougar

In 1975, Helen Reddy sang, "I am woman hear me roar!" I’m convinced that was the roar of a Cougar.

I’m proclaiming 2015 to be the year of the new COUGAR!

What’s a C-O-U-G-A-R? She’s a Confident, Older, Unique, Genuine, Assertive and Racy woman. Cougar women can be married, single and come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Every woman has the potential to be a proud Cougar; she just has to start roaring!

Confident: Do you know what strengths you possess? Do you follow your gut instincts and stand up for what you believe in? How can you become self-assured? How do you filter out the negative opinions and societal judgment? These are questions that only you can answer. You know what work needs to be done on a physical, psychological and spiritual level to make you the most confident, so do it!

Older: There are a few perks to being older. Your experience is a valuable asset. You’ve learned some valuable lessons about dating, sex, relationships, raising kids and love. Share the knowledge that you’ve learned from your mistakes. Like a great bottle of wine, as we age we become richer and fuller. Bon Jovi proclaims, "It’s my life, it’s now or never. I ain’t gonna live forever. I just want to live when I’m alive, It’s my life!"

Unique: What makes you special? The combination of all your life experiences, knowledge and relationships have made you the person you are today. One of my favorite Cougar performers Bette Midler says, "Cherish forever what makes you unique, 'cause you’re really a yawn if it goes." What makes you different and what can you offer others? Once you figure out what makes you unique, embrace it. Normal is boring!

Genuine: Are you trying to be someone you’re not? Why own a fake designer handbag when you can have the real deal? Even though it’s scary to be honest about your thoughts and beliefs, it’s liberating. It’s too much work to be someone who you aren’t. The truth will set you free! A young cougar, Sara Bareilles sings, "Say what you wanna say, And let the words fall out. Honestly I wanna see you be brave."

Assertive:  Bob Marley the sage of Reggae says, "Get up standup; Standup for your rights." If you believe in something, make it happen. Being assertive doesn’t mean stepping on others to obtain what you want. It does mean we should express our feelings and thoughts. Being assertive will make you feel empowered.

Racy: We are lucky to live in an age of freedom of sexual expression. "I’m sexy and I know it!" LMFAO proclaims in his song. At age 75, Tina Turner still struts across a stage wearing short skirts and high heels. Is dressing sexy for the young and not the mature hot woman? Who says you can’t be racy and provocative at any age? How many men do you know who’ve complained about having a partner who’s too sexy? Being a sexual person is fun, exciting, and keeps your juices flowing.

Taye Diggs, the actor who helped Stella get her groove back in the 1998 film, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, defined a Cougar perfectly, "I’ve always been attracted to women who are assertive and have confidence—qualities older women possess. They’ve been on the Earth a little longer. They’re more seasoned. They don’t play games. They know what they want and they’re not afraid to tell you."
