Waking up and transitioning into a new day can be tough. Often times you probably find yourself shifting from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye; begrudgingly forcing yourself to move and take on the tasks of the day.

Your morning rituals will impact the next several hours, so it’s essential that you get off on the right foot. When done regularly, the power of a morning yoga practice can be energizing and healing.

Start your day more fit, focused and free from strife. Begin to move more mindfully. Allow yoga to work as a natural remedy to awaken your body and set you on a path for a productive day. Let these three reasons to use yoga to wake up set the stage for your overall well-being.

#1  Promotes health all through the day.

When the blaring and abrasive alarm goes off, the battle begins.

If you’re one of those happy-go-lucky people, who wake up full-speed-ahead, good for you. You have a running start and are way ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, most people struggle when the alarm abruptly jolts them awake. They quickly roll over to hit the snooze button and begin to address their agenda for the day.

Instead, take time to incorporate a yoga practice into your morning. Wake up knowing it’s your first opportunity to get your day off to a great start. Let the first few moments between groggy and get-up-and-go take you from a dream state to alert and alive.

Studies reveal that our sedentary lifestyles lead to health issues and lower life expectancy. Feel your body begin to open and prepare for action. Get your blood pumping and your muscles moving. You’re going to need all the energy you can get. Not to just make it through the day, but to fully experience life, and to own it.

Begin to notice how your body improves with each breath of fresh air. Focusing on your breathing can have a significant impact on your physiological and psychological well-being. Changes like lowering your blood pressure and heart rate, reducing stress and anxiety are all benefits of mindful breathing. It’s time to stop taking your ability to breathe for granted.

It won’t be long before you become more in tune and connected with your body—feeling better than you ever imagined you could. While the transformations may be subtle, I assure you, if you’re patient and persistent in your practice the changes will come. Soon you will be making more healthful choices throughout your day without giving it a thought.

Begin loving yourself enough to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s often the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.

#2  Supports an upbeat mood.

Everyone experiences life’s obstacles and it’s easy to let the daily grind bring you down. While you can’t always control what comes your way, you can control how you react to it.

Your morning yoga practice will offer you time to focus and calm your mind; giving you greater clarity and helping you maintain your composure through the ups and downs of the day. A serene mindset will help you let go when faced with confrontations and uncomfortable situations. You will discover how to handle the stresses of the day with greater ease. Preparing you to go from 110mph to Zen.

Consider beginning your morning routine by having the most important conversation of the day—the one with yourself. Get a clear idea of what you want and set an intention to achieve it. If you set the spiritual tone of your day at the onset, you will be less likely to be sucked into the big, black hole of doom and gloom delivered by the onslaught of social media.

If you begin your day focusing on the positive things in life you can learn to transform your thoughts and how you interact with the world. Make a sincere effort to silence your inner critic. Stop listening to that voice that tells you that you’re not good enough, smart enough, or thin enough. If you wouldn’t say it to your best friend, don’t say it to yourself.

We can easily get stuck in the ‘me and mine’ mentality, making unwanted room for stress and depression. Stop worrying about what could happen to you and shift your attention to others. Use your morning practice to foster gratifying qualities like patience and compassion, bringing you a greater sense of joy and pleasure throughout the day. Learning to practice simple acts of kindness will brighten your day and bring you closer to those around you.

#3  Boosts mental clarity.

Yoga enthusiasts have long known that the advantages of a regular practice go well beyond the physical realm. It is also an excellent way to quiet the mind and improve concentration.

Among the amazing psychological benefits is increased mental clarity. A recent study showed that practicing yoga for 20 minutes could actually improve brain function. The researchers said that after practicing yoga, “the participants were better able to focus their mental resources, process information quickly, more accurately and also learn, hold and update pieces of information."

Whether you need to power through a project for work, or clear your mind for an important meeting, you will achieve higher levels of clarity and awareness. When faced with the task of making critical decisions in your day-to-day activities, you will have the upper hand.

Society’s dependence on electronics and the internet have become a growing addiction. While there’s nothing wrong with using these modern devices, your overuse of them is compromising your awareness to your surroundings and emotional wellness. Incorporating the mind-body techniques of yoga will improve your overall brain function and cognitive skills.

Reframe your perspective.

Jump starting your morning routine with a yoga practice will set the tone for your day. It doesn’t just get the kinks out, it awakens your body, boosts your mood, and revs up your brain.

Try swapping out the snooze button for a morning yoga session; you might just be surprised what a difference it will make. Imagine how much better would you feel if you began your hectic day wide-awake and full of life.
