Whitney Houston's death is another example of a superstar burning out before their time.
It’s happened again. Another American Icon burning out in what should be the prime of their life.
Why is it that individuals who are blessed with such God given talent and ability often lead such tragic lives?
I believe the answer is found in the lyrics of one of Whitney Houston’s most popular songs, The Greatest Love.
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
As the old expression says, you can’t love someone else until you first love yourself. We often grow up believing we need things from outside us to make us happy and to make us feel loved.
But we can not give what we don’t already have.
No matter how much fame one has, no matter how angelic a voice may be, if that person does not love themself there will always be a part of them that struggles and feels like something is missing.
Instead of looking within for the love and happiness that is already there, many of these individuals look outside of themselves to fill this void. And this is where many of these iconic figures go wrong.
We have seen this story so many times before. From Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and now Whitney Houston.
But I believe these individuals are not only gifts to us for their talents but often because they can be catalysts for our own growth in life.
One of my mentors once said, A Smart person learns from their own mistakes, but an intelligent person learns from the mistakes of others.”
By looking at these individuals we can learn from the events of their lives and their tragic deaths.
Instead of looking outside and chasing the next golden rainbow, let us look within to find the love and happiness that is already with in.
And like the song says:
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all.
And once we have this self love, we are better prepared to share our lives and have the type of relationship we really desire.
