Here's Why It's Good To Worry About What People Think

This trend has popped in and out of your life an annoying amount of times, it is actually positive

The tricky trend of "worrying about what people think" has popped in and out of my life numerous times and just recently it has shown its ugly face again, but this time I see it very differently. I used to think you should just be able to get rid of this forever but time and time again I have been proven wrong which has led me to the idea that maybe this is a good thing … let me explain!

What I have noticed with clients and myself is that the most common reason we worry about what people think is because we are actually judging ourselves and are not completely comfortable with what we are doing. The common trend is that our self-esteem is low and we are conflicted about what we have decided, how we have behaved, or what we want.

Essentially, part of us is supporting ourselves and the other part isn’t; you will hear yourself and others say things like "well part of me thinks this is what I want" or "my head is telling me one thing but my heart is telling me another." However, I have worked with these situations hundreds of times and have been extremely successful at resolving them with both clients and myself. This has led me to the idea that "worrying about what people think" is situation dependent. It can come and go depending on the situation.

Let me give you an example, I used to worry about what people thought about my career choice and that they were going to think it was silly and useless. After I got my confidence in this area through experience as well as the mental and emotional work I did, I can now honestly say I am extremely proud of what I do and it never crosses my mind to worry about what people think of it. I am no longer conflicted, I know the power of what I do and I can completely own my decision to be in this career. Therefore, before I became comfortable with my choice I worried about what people thought and once I got comfortable with my choice, this tricky trend a speak of disappeared. But then it came back … in a different situation.

I have recently made some changes and decisions surrounding my relationship and what I want my relationship to look like and because these changes were new and out of my comfort zone I have not yet got comfortable with and been able to own my choices. I am certainly doing the mental/emotional work I need to as well as sticking with my decision so I can ensure I have the experiences needed to completely own these new choices. But in the present moment, right here and now … yes, I worry about what people think.

Here is why this is good …

Remember what I said earlier, "the most common reason we worry about what people think is because we are actually judging ourselves and are not completely comfortable with what we are doing." For me this is exciting, it is a reminder that I am stepping out of my comfort zone and following MY heart. This is exciting if you choose to look at it this way, because this is a platform for growth and development. It is an opportunity to recognize what is preventing you from taking yourself to the next level and then of course you must choose to push though, crawl over, or sneak around whatever obstacles you are faced with. Of course you can choose to worry about what people think and let it stop you from following your heart but doesn’t this sound like more fun?

Next time you are worrying about what people think, I want you to remember to do it anyways and if there are mental/emotion blockages find someone to support you so you can get rid of it, the sooner you do this the sooner you can own your choices and this tricky trend will disappear. Let this not-so-tricky-anymore trend be a reminder you are moving forward in your life and before you know it you will look back and laugh about when you used to worry about what people think.
