I Believe

"Are you with me" is the universal language of connection. I believe that the more connected we feel, the more joy we possess in our lives.

About Jan Canniff

Relationships fascinate me.   They shape our inner world.  Whether it be our relationship with our self, spouse, children, parents, siblings, friends, colleagues, pets, world, or our God, it’s about connection.  I believe the more connected we feel with ‘all that is’,  the more joy we contain and the more love we give.  It naturally overflows from a grateful connected heart.   This is the reason I’ve worked to become a relationship expert.  I believe in the power of relationships to change the world – both inner and outer.

I love God, family, people, and nature.   I love insights, words, and ideas.  I feel especially privileged to have spent the last thirty years sitting in a counselor’s chair.  Connecting with people and being invited into their lives has been an honor.  When I think of my past clients, the word “delightfully indomitable” comes to mind.  It’s not that we haven’t had some challenges at times, but I’ve met with people that show their strong inner core and resilience in the face of struggles.  Every one of them has inspired me and been responsible for my own growth and expanded views of finding meaning in struggles and sufferings.  As I’ve journeyed alongside, I’ve learned patience in letting things unfold and witnessed the joy of growth and healing both in individuals and in couples.

Eight months ago, I shut down my private practice and moved to a small island only accessible by ferry. I live in a picturesque community surrounded by nature.  The only sounds here are the doves cooing and the occasional car that goes down the road.  It is a time of quiet and reflection. At first, I had difficulty adjusting but as time goes on, I am moving deeper into this new way of life.  I now have time to reflect on the gifts of knowledge that have been given to me during the counseling years and how I can share these insights with others.  I want to share my knowledge, inspiration, encouragement that has been imparted to me in the last three decades.

I am a registered and licensed Washington State Mental Health Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor.  I hold an additional specialization as a Certified Gottman method Couples Therapist.  I have thirty years of experience in counseling individuals, couples, families, and groups.  In 1987 I received my Master’s degree in Psychology.  My extensive experience was gained in various settings:  mental health clinics; outreach sites;  psychiatric hospital; youth and family agency; Christian churches; and private practice, plus working for a divorce recovery program.

For the last ten years I have specialized primarily in couples counseling after becoming certified as a Gottman method couple’s therapist.  I have found my experience, training, and knowledge to be extremely helpful in helping couples find fulfilling relationships.  Ongoing educational training is a priority in my life.  I love to keep attaining knowledge on ways to better help my clients.
