About Mitchell Tepper
You don’t have to break your neck to learn how to be a great lover or a capable partner. I have literally done that, and can save you years of misery and heartache in figuring out how to find happiness after experiencing a serious illness or injury. I grew up with Crohn's Disease (IBD) and acquired a spinal cord injury at age 20 as the result of a diving accident while lifeguarding. Hence, I bring a lifetime of first-hand experience with chronic conditions and disability to my mission of helping you hold on to physical and emotional intimacy while going through challenging life transitions.
My own experimentation and quest for learning started 30 years ago after waking up in the ICU paralyzed from the neck down. Unable to move and devoid of feeling, one of my first questions was, "will I ever be able to have children?" Not satisfied with the answer and the lack of available information on my potential for finding a partner and having a fullfilling sex life, I made it my business to find out on my own.
Since then, I have become a husband, a father, a researcher, a doctor, an entrepreneur, a professor, and an internationally recognized sexual health expert. In 1996 I founded The Sexual Health Network, Inc. and launched SexualHealth.com, the first website devoted exclusively to sexual health and ending the silence around sexuality and disabilities or medical conditions. A self-proclaimed “Prophet of Pleasure,” my whole career has been dedicated to helping others feel whole again in the face of painful losses through taking pleasure again in their sexuality.
My credentials include a Master of Public Health from Yale University, and a PhD in Human Sexuality Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I am an American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) Certified Sexuality Educator and AASECT Certified Sexuality Counselor and a Cerified PAIRS Instructor. I currently serve on AASECT’s Sexuality Counselor Certification Committee, on the editorial board of the journal Sexuality and Disability, and on the board of directors of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.
I am regularly called on by the media and have been featured on CNN, Discovery, PBS and in popular press, including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, GQ, and AARP. My publications include the critically acclaimed opus, Sexual Health [Four Volumes].
