How Dancing Can Increase Your Happiness

How Dancing Can Increase Your Happiness
Are you doing ecstatic dancing and didn't realise you were? Sexologist Dr. Martha Tara Lee explains.

I love dancing. There are not many places one can just dance. But why move in the first place you may ask?

Movement is Healing

“Everything is made of energy: molecules, pathogens, prescription medicines, and even emotions.” - Cyndi Dale, The Subtle Body

For me, movement is not just an expression of who we are. I've learned it is the way we can process whatever we have unconsciously picked up and stored within our bodies. After loosening the energies, we can then release the tension or blockages so that we don't hold onto what doesn't serve us anymore. Think of how your stomache tightens just that bit when your phone rings— Who's calling? What do they want? Or how you stop yourself from running when somebody shouts at you. Yup, that's right. Such tension might still be locked in your body and needs to be physically released.

What I Do

With the above in mind, I do put on loud music and dance (often like a mad dog) in my apartment as often as I can. However it is not the same as when you are in a big space with loud music, feeling the vibrations surging through your body and allowing yourself to be moved vs. forcing yourself to be moved.

I used to attend 5 Rhythms when it was still in Singapore, and what I liked most wasn't the facilitation — even though it was beneficial. What I relished was being left alone and being allowed to just do my own thing — to just be.

"Movement has become a priority in my life because my body loves movement, is happy and thanks me for it when I listen to her." - Dr. Martha Tara Lee

When I dance, I connect with the joy of being in my body, and more importantly with being alive.

What is Ecstatic Dance?

I made this dance video with the help of my good friend Sri Mulyadi, who is an energy healer, on Wed 28 May 2014. We recorded it in under 5 minutes in one take at Zhongshan Park. I have titled this video: "Ecstatic Dance".

To explain what my definition of Ecstatic Dance is:

Ecstasy = A trance or trance-like state in which a person transcends normal consciousness. More definitions here.

To me, Ecstatic Dance is when we lose ourselves in our dance. We become so wrapped up in our dance — with feeling the music, letting go of our minds, and surrendering to how our bodies wants to move. This is when the world vanishes. We are past caring about how we look, what people around us think of us, and of our dance. Our dance is much, much more. It is our connection with our inner knowing that we are spirit.

"Ecstatic dance is the magic that happens when our inner knowing that we are transcendent beings meets our joy of being in our bodies." - Dr. Martha Tara Lee

How This Connects With The Bigger Picture

Some people would call what I just described Movement Meditation. To me, the difference lies in the overflowing of joy (hence ecstatic) of being in our bodies. If we can transcend our mind, and just allow — even if for a second — then we begin to be conscious of the possibilities. We can cultivate this: let go more, and allow it to overflow into the other areas of our lives. Perhaps then we can begin to grasp how to apply and attain Ecstatic Fame in our work and lives.

"Ecstatic fame happens when we are in touch with our orgasmic selves and use it to manifest explosive success."Dr Martha Tara Lee

Sounds Good? What's Next?

If this is all too chim (Singlish for "complicated") for you, these are some things you are do to begin connecting with your body without getting overwhelmed:

  •  Follow your pleasure! The way you prefer, want to, like to feel pleasure is different from everybody else. What springs to mind as you read it? Could you do it? How about a bit of it everyday?
  •  Explore the concept of pleasure by watching my other videos relating to pleasure here and here!
  •  Read my past articles relating to movement here and here!
  •  Seek support. You can always hire me to learn how to better connect with your body, with pleasure, and with life!

"Connect with your body. Follow what feels good. When you have a relationship with pleasure, pleasure will happen easily and effortlessly for you." - Dr. Martha Tara Lee
