Isabelle: I wonder what my purpose is...
Hugo Cabret: Everything has a purpose, clocks tell you the time, trains takes you to places. I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. I knew that when I first heard that line from the motion picture Hugo that I would never want to forget it! As a mental health practitioner, I would love for everyone who seeks treatment for anxiety and depression to walk out of my office with this thought in mind that she or he could not be an “extra part” in life but that everyone of us has a reason to be here. Every person questioning their self worth regardless of the choices they made in life could benefit from such a deep and powerful meaning spoken by this charismatic 12 year-old boy.
I am all about optimism ever since I first read Viktor Frankl’s – Man’s Search for Meaning. Viktor so eloquently put that when we have been stripped of everything: our pride, our dignity, our respect, even our last earthly possession – that one thing remains. It is the one thing that no one can give us or no one can take away from us and it is the one that always remains our choice – and that is our Attitude!
Our Attitude determines our life, pure and simply! If you choose a negative Attitude then the world will deliver a negative and pessimistic world at your doorstep. If you chose a loving, healthy, nurturing Attitude then the world will deliver in kind to your doorstep. The choice is always our own – so choose wisely!
