Do A Lot Of People Really Practice Polygamy?

Do A Lot Of People Really Practice Polygamy?
Don't be fooled: polygamy isn't trending.

The other day, a reporter for a very well known national periodical interviewed us about polygamy, which is when someone is married to more than one person at the same time.

We have researched marriage around the world for 32 years and interviewed successfully married couples in all 50 states, 49 countries and on all seven of the world’s continents. Among our many findings is this truth: polygamy is NOT a desired marriage model and it is most certainly NOT trending!

When you look at a map of the world you will note that polygamy is principally practiced for the most part is the Middle East, Northern Africa and in parts of Malaysia.

Given the population of the world (some 7 billion people) the practice of polygamy is, relatively speaking, not practiced and has been outlawed in most countries and continents. It seems that more than 80% of the world does NOT allow or recognize Polygamous marriages. And in those countries that do, polygamy is rarely practiced.

The reasons why polgamy is illegal are simple: it can increase the spread of AIDs; the subjugation and humiliation of women is rampant in polygamous marriages with one man and multiple wives; and in an "equality based society," Polygamy has no place. Women are NOT slaves, they are not objects, they are not second or third class citizens. Those who suggest otherwise are fools and cowards.

We recently traveled to Africa to study the Maasai Tribe, who measure a man’s wealth by how many cattle he has and by how many wives he has. We don’t know about you, but this nonsense flies in the face of human equality between men and women.

If you want to practice polygamy, understand that you do so at great risk to women, at great risk for the perpetuation of terrible diseases, and at great risk to the children that are born of such abnormal and incestuous relationships.

Polygamy is neither normal nor being increasingly practiced in the world today. Those who suggest otherwise have an agenda that does not match reality.
