Desperately Seeking The New Year Kiss?

Over twenty years ago, I remember being single and going out New Year's Eve with my cousin (female, also single), because we were both probably feeling a little lonely and wanted company and wanted to get out. I recall quite distinctly, the smell of desperation, loneliness and emptiness in the club, as it got closer and closer to midnight. We made a game of deciding who in the room would be making the moves on whom. And we hugged and toasted at midnight and witnessed the anticlimax for so many.
It entertained us, yet is was sadly poignant at the same time. And if we didn't have a beloved, at least we knew we had family and that we weren't completely "alone". And that is my point in writing this article.
