She says, “My husband just went into his garage again and is ignoring me! What is he mad about? He spends more time there than he does with me!” He says, “I just need some time to putz in my garage with my machines, watch a golf tournament, smoke a cigar and relax. Ours was a typical anorexic story. My child could not control the outrageous, tedious and irrelevant abundance of homework she was being given in her teaching program. Nor could she control the fact that the district threw her into a classroom with no supervision, no help and no preparation, as if she had already completed her student teaching. Mine was a good child and she wanted to do her best, but between teaching three classes and taking a full load of classes herself, it was nearly impossible to control anything in her life.
For most women the end of a marriage feels like starting life completely over from scratch. So although it might feel strange, divorce can ultimately become the “best, worst thing” that ever happens. And, armed with that mindset, life after divorce can signal a new beginning. There's something about that unfinished business, about being left hanging without an explanation that leaves even the most confident of us wondering what we did wrong, and whether or not we should try to contact him to elicit some kind of an answer.
