Dating super models, wedding photo eff-ups & buying his underwear.
It's Friday and Thanksgiving (T-Gives to our editor Genevieve) is right around the corner. You need a chance to put your work on the side-burner for a second and learn a thing or three about love and relationships.
According to the bros at Asylum, there is a reason that men all seem to want to date models—according to their headline, "your odds of dating a supermodel are surprisingly good." Given a set of circumstances (rich, tall, attractive and live in NYC or Los Angeles), it's almost impossible not to date a super model. It turns out that confidence can turn … Read More
For a cheap date, trying looking but not buying.
Fine, the market is turning around, if you choose to believe Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. I don't always take the word of a college dropouts or 80-year-old Nebraskans, but I'll make an exception for these two with the caveat that the "economy" generally lags behind the stock market by 18 months or so. How does that help an unemployment rate in the mid 9 percent range? Does it make it easier to make ends for you and me? Does it make relationships easier? No, but it does make us get creative. This time around, consider window-shopping. Read More
Tiffani-Amber Thiessen's baby news reminds me of my all-time TV crushes.
As you may know, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (now just Tiffani Thiessen, I reckon) married a guy named Brady Smith in 2005 and now, according to LimeLife, is pregnant. In Hollyweird you're not really taken until you have a kid or have been together for 12 years, so this pregnancy thing is pretty devastating to a lot of us. The news has me recalling my various TV crushes and what they taught me. Here they are in chronological order:
I'm 9 and she's Danica McKellar. My feelings about The Wonder Years' Winnie Cooper are known. When I was a boy, … Read More
Guys, it appears, tend to say "I love you" first.
Our homeys at Asylum recently referenced a study revealing it takes the average guy seven months to say the three magic words: "Let's eat acid." Kidding, it's "I love you," of course, and the average woman takes eight months to say the same phrase.
This news karate-chops stereotypes about a certain gender getting weak in the knees regarding certain feelings. In theory, both partners could say it at the same time, but in real life someone has to take off his/her proverbial clothes first… and that person is almost always me. An economist can assign a much different dollar value for men & women for marriage.
The Beatles declared that you "Can't Buy Me Love" (as did Patrick Dempsey) but that doesn't mean you can't put a price on it. According to Paul Frijters of Australia's Queensland University (per the Sidney Morning Herald) marriage is worth approximately A$32,000 (that's $30,000 in US dollars) in happiness to a man, and A$16,000/$15,000 to a lady. Essentially, the act of getting married makes a man equally happy as getting lump payments equaling $30,000. The analysis goes on to mention that men feel like divorce is like losing A$110,000 of … Read More
An event to make starting over way easier.
Ever heard of a divorce fair? It's sort of like a job fair but for people who have ended their marriages. As you may recall, other older divorce fairs didn't start with much of a bang. The Viennese divorce fair was a total sausage fest. The London divorce fair is starting to gain some steam. But, per Reuters, the Parisians figured out how to do it right, right now. While previous shows set their laser beams on putting people together with legal and financial professionals, the Gallic version was all about getting your groove back post-split. Read More
Many states are reconsidering spousal support.
There was a very interesting story in a recent Wall Street Journal around the ancient right of alimony, money one ex-spouse (usually the man) pays to the other after a divorce.
The gist of the grist is that several states are currently reevaluating the way they handle spousal support. Alimony came into prominence in the US in the 60s and 70s in lockstep with an increase in divorce. In some states people can receive alimony for their entire life, even after they've remarried.
Proponents say the money compensates some spouses who have sacrificed careers for families and … Read More
A Midwestern woman deserves the significant other of the week award.
Pop culture has made plenty of hay (hey hey hey) of men doing very brave things in the name of love. Not Without My Daughter and Commando featured parents taking on very bad men. Every Mel Gibson film seems to involve revenge for murdered wives. Legends Of The Fall was pretty much nothing but vengeance by a very put-out Brad Pitt. And almost every other movie revolves around a virtuous man rescuing a damsel-in-distress. Not very often do we get anything worth watching about a lady saving her dude (except in soft porn). Maybe … Read More
Has the hen party passed the stag party in terms of debauchery?
It appears as if the bachelorette party is here to stay. For a hot minute I thought that at the corner of Girls Gone Wild, gender convergence and the wide acceptance of phallic-shaped cakes these fetes would go the way of the dodo. But no—hen parties are not going anywhere and they are not f*cking around. Read: Bachelorette Party Dos and Don'ts
Observationally, bachelor parties have been getting slightly milder (The Hangover notwithstanding). Long gone are the days of filling a hotel suite with hookers, unhappily married buddies and one woman willing to do something unholy with a four-legged animal. … Read More
A Sicilian man tries to got back to jail to escape fights with his wife.
Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. According to Reuters, a convict in Sicily decided he'd rather remain in prison than remain under house arrest with his wife.
The man, one Santo Gambino, was put in jail for illegally dumping toxic materials and, due to overcrowded prisons in the boot-shaped nation, was later released to house arrest. Unfortunately, being released from the pokey does not make one a free man. It didn't take Gambino long to trudge back to the police precinct and ask to be re-incarcerated.
