When researching quotes for this article, I was trying to find quotes that really captured the heart break of losing a friend. Because that’s what it is: breaking up with a friend is heartbreaking.

When you become friends with someone, truly great friends, you welcome them into your heart. You give them pieces of you. You share hair-ties and secrets and promises of forever. To separate from a friend is to rip out the corner of your heart where they took up space. You are forever altered.

One thing I found disappointing is that most of the quotes I found about lost friendships were bitter. They were angry and cold. Denying that ever a friendship took place. Saying things like "I’ve never lost a friend, but I realized I never truly had one". What a cruel thing to do to your memory. To distort all of your happiest days into a still picture cut by shards of pain masquerading as hate.

We need to face our hurt feelings with honesty. What we are feeling when we break up with a friend may be anger on the surface, but that is only to cover the hurt we are trying to bury.

The mourning we have planted deep inside of us. In a time of so much loss, don’t add to it by taking back your happy recollections. Don’t rob yourself of your happy thoughts, or one day pixie dust won’t be enough to lift you off the ground. You will be too weighed down by your own resentments.
