It's almost the new year again, so it's that time where we sit back and review the past twelve months. Plenty of publications have come out with their best of the best for 2017 already.
Blake Shelton is the sexiest man alive (I'm still a little shocked tbh) and Time, Inc. came out with the person — well people — of the year (bravo!).
But did you know there is a COLOR of the year?! That's right... the Pantone Color Institute has spoken, and after grueling research and much deliberation, the color of the year is officially here.
And their pick for 2018 color of the year: UltraViolet.
YES. Be excited!
This color seems badass just from the name.
Many purple fans already know what purple represents — it showcases wealth and sophistication. It beams passion with its rich undertones as well as romance and sensitivity.
Not to mention it's the color of royalty. So that obviously means we are all princesses automatically when we wear it. But UltraViolet (Pantone 18-3838, to be exact.) is a little more than that. It represents empowerment, visionary thinking, and the strength of new changes. It's also associated with a powerful social movement to defeat sexism.
I think we could all agree that is a good color to represent the pending year. It's true that this past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions. So having a color that beams that we are nowhere near throwing in the towel is quite spectacular.
To make UltraViolet you need to bring red and blue together. This is the perfect example of how there are surely sides that need to blend together. Especially if we want to achieve the strength that this color is proposing. It's true to think that we as people are far more powerful sticking together.
So how does Pantone go about making this decision each year? Well, for starters, they sent ten people out in the world to come up with the color for 2018. They look at trends and popular items from all different areas to come to a collective decision.
They pool their research together, analyze it all and them come to the conclusion.
The past few years the colors have been catered to the unique identity that each year has brought to the table. Last year was a green tone and the year before had two colors: rose quartz and serenity. Those colors were perfect picks but the UltraViolet is definitely the most passionate pick for so many reasons.
“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today," says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
Hopefully, we can follow the path this color has for us in the next year and truly make big changes. Good changes, the kind of changes that bring peace and understanding. Rather than hurt and confusion which has been happening more and more.
The most beautiful part of the color is that it represents hope. Hope is the only thing that is stronger than fear. Hope is powerful, it's a ray beam of sunshine on the cloudiest of days. All you need is a little ounce of it and the courage for change will follow.
